I'm looking to purchase a device for pass-through programming and would welcome some recommendations on which tool anybody would suggest.

I was looking at the one from Snapon but it's only available from US I think it was around $1600

Or one from Drewtech. It's at least a lot cheaper, just below 400 dollar.

If you plan to work within a particular line, I would recommend checking with that mfg to see their recommended interfaces... that is, ones that said mfg has validated for their line and or software. You can do so by going to their web-sites via:

OEM One Stop TechInfo (http://www.oem1stop.com) or Home - National Automotive Service Task Force (http://www.nastf.org) to name a few that contain links to all major mfg's. I like the nastf site cuz it contains a matrix of what any mfg has to offer to the independant workshops.

Aside from what I've stated, I would highly recommend any of Drewtech's products... infact the J2534 interfaces that Snap-On (the one that Snap-On was selling earlier was made by Actia, just labeled S.O. and was a black/red unit) and Bosch (once again, re-labeled and is green) is selling is made by them.

Oldford is right that Drewtech does have line of interfaces that are in the $400 range... they are the Mongoose line and are vehicle platform specific (ie only contain the protocol for that line), and is what Toyota modeled for their Tech-Stream (Monogoose MFC). The unit that contains all protocols is the Cardaq-Plus which is around $1,500.

check out thier web site DrewTech: Vehicle Diagnostic, Scantool, PassThru (J2534), and OBD-II Hardware (http://www.drewtech.com) you'll find some good info to help you with your choice.. plus theres some videos you can see that might clear things up.

I own and have used various J2534 interfaces (actia, snap-on, drewtech, autoland, programma...amog others) as I'm an instructor (contract Euro trainer).

Aside from J2534 pass-thru usage which was only intended to flash/update drivetrain controllers only (pcm/tcm), some mfg's have expanded to include online diagnostics and programming such as Toyota (TechStream) BMW (3g ISTA/P) Volvo and MBZ as well.

If you need any help.. drop me line or others here... after all we are a community based on helping one another !!

Just copied following from erwin and indeed one of the interfaces they support is actia and can be used with their diagnostic software which is at a good price. Just pay to use the software as and when required as I understand. Don't know if the software comes with gff but I'll soon found out because I just bought them, wil let you all know.

Ordering EU-5-VAS diagnostics software

For complete installation a Basis CD and a Model CD is always required. In addition, along with the Model CD a supplementary CD is also supplied, such as the configuration CD that is required for the successful creation of the connection to the VW systems.

The one from Snap-On is a Drew Tech CarDAQ+ painted black w/ a Snap-On logo.

Its best to get it direct from the manufacturer, Drew Tech www.drewtech.com (http://www.drewtech.com) Its the same price as through Snap-On but the support is much better.

Its also reccomended by many manufacturers.

Mike Drew, owner of Drewtech, wrote the majority of the SAE J2534 protocols. His will work when others won't.

you can get a small discount by using tunertools.com

Just to update you all on this.

I installed original Base CD for EU5 vas diagnostics along with all brands on another laptop today and tested it with my actia passthru xs interface.

Paid for the licence for an hours use and tried it on a 2007 Skoda Fabia, first thing I noticed different from cracked base CD is that you don't get the extra buttons at the top for OBD!

Then I connected using guided functions and it only gave me options of Fabia from 2007 - 2010 and my engine code wasn't listed, and it didn't connect to any controller with the passthru apart from abs and engine.

Tried on same car the cracked version with my vas5054 and had options of earlier years upto 2007 and 2007-2010, choose earlier 2007 and found my engine code. Managed to connect to ALL controllers with cracked base cd and 5054.

So if anyone wants to go ligitemate and pay for use of their EU5 software just be aware you don't get the same coverage as dealer would.

I'm sticking with the cracked version thank you very much, however I am testing it on later vehicles at the moment.

Will keep all updated.

EU5 Software is what it says, it will only work on EU5 compliant vehicles, you can have full access to vag diagnostics ect but you will need to purchase a genuine vas tool (they dont like chinese) but you will need to pay for a subscription for VW , Audi, Seat <Skoda all separate, you can also subscribe to geko for security funtions ect, but all adds upto load of Money. hope this helps you can find out more on the Erwin pages Andy

He's the same guy...
But the problem is more related to actia passthru device than to j2534 devices i guess.

I've successfully used this on Honda, BMW, Volvo, toyota.......

Cheap USB J2534 cable with arm chip works as passthru - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1607246)

Will take alot of time to get it right. Honda was the easiest. BMW setup the hardest.
