Wife has an 04 plate 2.0TD Suzuki Gran Vitara.
The orange engine management lamp came on, had a quick google, lots report this along with loss of power (engine goes into safe limp home mode).
Hers is driving normally with no loss of power, just the orange light on all the time. Any ideas what to check for please or what can cause this?

Get it scanned for fault codes and post them here.

Hey you can disconnect the battery for 2 minutes for most cars, but just dissconnect it for 10 minutes and plug it back. Run the engine and rev it up. If the engine light comes back on get it scanned
When the ignition switch is turned ON, ignition switch signal is sent to ECM. The ECM causes the main relay to turn ON. Then, ECM (PCM) being supplied with the main power, turns ON the malfunction indicator lamp. When the engine starts to run and no malfunction is detected in the system, MIL goes OFF but if a malfunction was or is detected, MIL remains ON when the engine is running.

BUT none of this will help you trace the fault!!!! Get it code read, you may just catch something before more damage is caused,do not ignore problems.

As daft as it sounds, could it be triggered by low oil level?
As I say, it's the wifes car, with wife looking after it, and I just checked the oil, a tiny bit on the tip of the dipstick ffs.
I have topped it up now, but years ago I had a car that actually had a sensor for low oil level.
I intend to get it read, but just interested if something like that could cause it, and the system latches it? I'm just interested what a Gran Vitara monitors and probable causes......

Low oil level could trigger off the warning light but not directly.Such as on some Vauxhalls low oil level will set a knock sensor code.
I have never seen a code set on a peugeot Hdi though so i doubt it would be anything to do with it.
More likely a sensor giving a direct fault.

OK, thanks for the replies.
I'd rather be in a position to sort this myself, as people are quoting ?40 to scan the fault code, I'd rather spend ?70 on buying the kit for future use too (less than 2 paid for scans).
So I am thinking of buying a Scantool Elmscan5 Compact USB package for ?70
Any views on this kit?
Edit: It is a Diesel and acording to logbook, date of registration is March 2004 so should be OBD compliant? I found the socket under the steering wheel with 6 wires going to it.

Diesels have to comply with EOBD from 1st. January 2004.
Except when this car is considered to be a commercial van or the Gross Vehicle weight is too large.
I would try it first before buying.

get th launch x431 diagun. It is very easy to use plus you can get information on the trouble codes by entering a menu with lists of manufactured cars.

Bought the Elmscan5 and it works!
Below are results........
P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow
P0500* [Pending] Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"
Any ideas on what that means on a Grand Vitara?
Thanks

P0400 - What is says. Flow is incorrect. Valve stuck/jammed or blocked by a lot of dirt.
P0500 - Vehicle speed problem. Speed is probably send over a bus to the engine ecu by the ABS. You need to read the codes from the ABS system. You can't use the Elmscan for that, so find somebody with suitable dealer (equivalent) equipment.

Thanks again.
I'll look over the weekend for the EGR valve and try to clean it up.

Going back to the idea of disconnecting the battery, as a result of having to fit a new clutch master cylinder, I had to remove the battery so I could get to the slave cylinder bleed nipple.
Anyway, the light was still on afterwards, so plugged in my reader and selected clear. Fault light now off!
I googled and read that removing the battery only works with OBD1 and not OBD2, I assume OBD2 has non volatile memory for faults?
