Howdy folks is anyone on here running the new system 4.0 for genisys? I am running 3.0 and was looking to upgrade soon if it is worth it. I also have another scanner with the old system and wanted to upgrade that to 3.0. Is anyone familiar with doing this? how can I backup my old system?

they use a linux based system that locks the software cards to the motherboard/cpu once their used, thats why the cards have SIM cards built into them, this prevents the software from being shared like a high school whore on prom night. so in theory you need to copy a virgin software card before being installed on the otc genysis. but thats not gonna happen until someone figures out how to clone second gen sim cards built into the otc cards, which probably wont happen.

i heard that the older cf cards are formatted in the macintosh format. when i plug a 3.0 card into my computer it says "this card is not formatted, would you like to format it now?" I have the latest software for it.(with smart cards) I need the operating system not the software.

I too have the new unused 09 smart cards but need version 4.0. I have downloaded 4.0 to a 4gb sandisk card but wont work in my genisis. Actually it locks the machine up & I need to unhook the battery then with old card works ok. I did know a software person from OTC & he said the cards were a big issue & needed to be Simlpetech & may even have been propritory for OTC? Unfortunatly he is no longer there & I cant reach him.
I may call OTC & ask or try a Simpletech card. I will post back on my findings.

cool. I read on the otc site that you have to format it with a mac computer. Maybe if you try it from a mac it will work. Like i said my 3.0 card makes windows ask to format the card. It can't read it so its definitely not a windows format. I was going to buy a mac just for testing that but that won't be for awhile.

its a linux based OS, they did that so it could be written as a proprietary program exclusively for OTC, the data cards are SIM card encrypted and are written to and matched to your scanners motherboard number(this is why there a one shot install and cant be shared with your friends, and if you need your scanner repaired you have to send in the cards at the same time so they can reinstall the data), which is actually written on the board by hand, don't believe me take yours apart and you will see it. the upgrades less than $249.00 US if your like me and actually work on cars for a living then this shouldn't be a real huge amount to come up with to keep your scanner updated. besides its cheaper than a modus or bosch updates.

You are talking about the cf card for the Operating system right? What about the smart cards? they can only be used once and then thats it? Are you in the Sacramento area elfster? I have the 09 updates with smart cards but I need the 4.0 operating system. is the operating system (cf card)matched to the motherboard or the smart cards?

the CF card acts as the external memory for the motherboard, on the card is the actual OS whether its 4.0 or 2.0, either way it is written in a linux based code, once it is installed the motherboards serial number is coded (written) to the CF and the smart cards, the smart cards if you look at them close you'll that they use SIM cards, just in a really big plastic sheet the size of a credit card, the second generation of SIM card encryption has yet to be (cracked) by the mainstream "pirates" so you cant even copy or "clone" the card which is what you would want to do with a virgin uninstalled smart card. so once you install a smart card to a scanner it is tagged with that motherboards serial number, that way you can't share your cards with your friends, if theoretically you could get the motherboard cloned (have it flashed with the same serial number as yours) then you could install the same smart cards on a different scanner, much like changing your pcs SID number. the CF card is just a flash memory card that's been formatted for the OS. no im located on the east coast.

Im attempting to find the root password or possibly login to our genisys as a superuser to unlock all applications. If anyone would like to bounce ideas around please let me know. Also if anyone could send me the system 3.0 or 4.0 update cd (iso format) it would be appreciated

Does the 3.0 software work? I would try to copy it to a cf card somehow(1gb) and boot the genisys. Do you have new smart cards for 4.0? I have heard that once you install the smart card to the genisys it copies the serial number so you can't pirate the smart card. I have the 2009 update but it only works with 4.0 so I need 4.0 software.

I have found a program that makes a physical image of the compact flash cards. I had to install the particular update software that matched 2.0 then 3.0 then 5.0 but after doing all that I have images of 3.0 4.0 and 5.0 cf cards that are ready to be installed in any scanner. I would be more than happy to post or share if anyone is interested. I will tell you after system 2.0 the card has to be a simpletech or stech brand. I have had sucess with cards of that make that did not come from OTC but others brands are unsupported. I use an eeprom flasher (CarProg) for airbag modules and I am curious if I can get anywhere with cloning serial #'s or reading smartcards any information would be very appreciated!!!
