View Full Version : Loom design software?

I don't know if anyone else has done or does this.. but I need to design and make a couple of wiring looms for two race cars.

Being race cars they're relatively simple from a wiring point of view and when I've done this before I've just done it using pen and paper and my noodle.

However, I wondered if there was anything out there s/w wise that would help and also possibly look more professional as then I could give the owners nice printed diagrams etc.

I guess I could use something like Eagle or PCB Express, but anyone know of anything more suited to this task?

Cheers!

Richy

Can you explain to me what are wiring looms? Sorry but I can't understand the term. If It is what I think you need than maybe I could help you. All the best.

wiring looms are cable harnesses (maybe you'll understand this :)),he wants to install wires in those cars and is looking for some software to do it easier i think.....

Thanks mate. Capish now ;) I thought it is something else. I can't help. Thanks for explanation again. Regards!

Yep, that's it. I need to make a couple of custom looms.

That is, start with a few reels of wire and heaps of connectors, fuse boxes etc. and end up with something like that picture which I can then fit to a car.

The software really is for helping in the design stage. I need to layout what is what and how it's all connected.

As I said, it's possible with existing 'circuit' design software (or a pencil and some paper) but I just wondered if there was anything more appropriate out there that would make it easier and also give me nice wiring diagram print-outs to give to the car owners so they can maintain it themselves after.

Cheers!

You dont want to do that, dont give them anything, if there's a problem with it later they can bring it back to you so you can make a few more ???? $$$$ ????'s

LOLicopters! Yeah - except with them being race cars they could be anywhere and as much as I'd love to follow them round Europe they're not sufficiently 'high budget' that they could afford to pay me to :)

never heard of such software but if you list what is needed and what you what and we all could help.....it probly be the best harness ever designed with all the knowledge on DK

Easy solution..... sell them 2 harness's (1 spare), they can then send that in for repair by you and you can send them a "loan" backup, if they are racecars they should have 2 of everything anyway, a bit like race tyres most have 1-2 or maybe even 3 sets of spares.

Regarding the software, I am sure there is something out there CAD based that will do what you want, hopefully someone will beable to help...... maybe even posting in PC Software section? I'm sure the PC gurus there will know of something.

CAD "Cumputor Aided Design" is proberbly the only software used for this purpose,

Best available Autodesk's AutoCad, but dont let the "Auto" make you think this software is easy....it is NOT, but if you can get it it is FANTASTIC..
they do many "Flavours" of autocad special for different uses..
but AutoCad is for General design.
And takes years of learning..So NO out of the box solution.
Search DK you will find it....
Also search net for VTC-AutoCad Training..:top:..

If you can use this software, you will be amazed at what it can do..

or you could just buy software and liecence i think its
$ 5000.

any good:

Schematic Software - Download SmartDraw FREE and get CAD Results without the CAD Hassles! (http://www.smartdraw.com/specials/schematic-software.htm)

Thanks all, I'll check out your suggestions. I used to have Autocad back in the 80's... I'm sure it's changed a bit now :)

The smart draw thing looks ok too, will have a play with the demo later.

I did also find this HarnWare - Welcome to Harnware.com (http://www.harnware.com/) don't know anything about it though.

You can also try CATIA. Basically you cant design a car, ship or plane without this software and it happens to have a module that does exactly what you need. Search the software section of this forum and you will find a cracked one. Costa a minimum of ?16,000 per license from the vendors

I have been using Tina Pro from DesignSoft for some years now for wiring modifications on buses. Its fairly easy to use and the circuits you design can be tested in the virtual world.
I suspect that the best software for the automotive market is VeSys. I have it, but have never managed to follow the licencing instructions. (crack).

Smartdraw trial version is just something that you can play with you can't actually use it because they water mark the drawing when you save it. Then they send you a freaking email spam daily several times a day to see if you want to buy a retail copy. That kind of thing really gets old. I like the ptogram for what little I tested. Good suggestion from others.
I would recommend this program from what experience that I have had.
