Is it possible to access a network shared folder that's on my PC on the Wii? If so, that would seriously increase my games list as well stop me from transferring so much media back and forth all the time.

smb share is available for films using mplayer ce but I'm not aware of games being able to be streamed just yet

you can use WiiMC - WiiBrew (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/WiiMC) or Downloads - mplayer-ce - MPlayer CE: Homebrew media player for the Nintendo GameCube / Wii. - Google Project Hosting (http://code.google.com/p/mplayer-ce/downloads/list) to play movies and audio wirelessly from your pc
what do you want to play from your pc folder?

Yeah. You would think that throwing a short-cut folder withing the wbfs folder on the wii usb hd and point it at the PC folder with additional games would work, but no dice.
I'm having trouble with the smb share with the mplayer to access my AVI, VOB and ISO movies. I'll keep playing with it.
Thanks.

Movies are fine enough, but games would be awesome.

I can't seem to get the wiimc to connect.
I've gone directly to my router and located all the IP's in the house. Here's what I've done.
DISPLAY NAME: PC (name to indicate it's my pc connection)
SHARE IP: ###.###.#.### (The IP for this pc only)
SHARE NAME: movies (name of the folder on my J: drive)
USERNAME: Michelle (only name of user on this pc)
PASSWORD: xxxxxxxxxxxx (the password to sign on to this computer)
And all I get is: ERROR - Failed to connect to network share
Is there a dumb dumb tutorial on this?
<------- not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

there was a couple of threads on this a while back.
i have both wiimc and mplayer sharing now. (did take a while to get it working lol)
have a look at these threads.
http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f16/movies-wii-96949/
http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f16/streaming-media-pc-194094/
if i remember correctly i had three major stumbling blocks.
1. sharing folder
i wasn't sharing correctly, you have to right click folder, then select share with certain people ,then highlight everyone from drop down menu then select add.
2. security.
the password is not the password for login to pc it is password for network sharing,
best thing to do is switch off password to start with and leave blank until you get it working, then add passwords.
you need to go into network sharing/ advanced options, here is a screenshot of important setting.
83452
i'm not sure about the encryption settings options, cant remember if i changed that for the wii or summit else.. lol
where i have pointed the arrow, this is what password refers to.
also your AV can block connections from wii to shared folder.
i was using avast at the time and had to change it, for some reason it see's the wii as a threat....
3. IP address
i had to set a static ip on the wii, each time i reset router the wii would be allocated a diffrent ip address.

Thanks. After a couple cups of coffee and getting the kids off to school, I know exactly what I'm going to tinker with this morning. I'll report back.

Both mplayer ce and wiimc work great. Turns out it was just the AV software. Got to figure out with setting exactly is messing with the wii.
Thank for the help!!

If you mean AVI files then the Wii will only plays a Wii version of an AVI file. There are convertors to convert a standard AVI to a Wii AVI. I think Any Video Converter (http://www.filehippo.com/download_any_video_converter/) will convert them.

Yeah sorry, I was referring to my Norton Security Suite (Anti Virus). Shutting it completely off works, but I'd like to figure exactly what is stopping the Wii from getting through.
And, for the record ... just about any format of music/video has worked for me so far.

i use an older version of wiimnc mostly,
it doesn't like higher quality films, goes out of sync then crashes.
maybe time for me to update to latest version.. :)

Ok its antivirus but in the picture channel you can play AVI files but they have to be the Wii AVI format. I've played movies on flash drives in there but they aren't very good.
Ive played movies through Mplayer CE and Wiimc. I have the Mplayer CE and Wiimc channels on the menu but Mplayer CE doesn't work even though a channel is only a short-cut to Mplayer CE on the SD card.

Yeah, sorry. The wii stock menu channel, "Picture" channel hasn't ever even been tested or used on my wii.
Where can I get a channel WAD for winmc? I can't seem to find the one I used to have on the PC storage.

Hi mate, Im sure you cant stream games with it, but....WIIMC works well with VLC shares, thats how I have mine set up and you can set it up to share folders on your PC.
you can also watch HD movies on the wii through it.(i think its the only way as the Wii dont do HD)
I believe it has to be Version 0.5.4 of VLC Shares
edit the WIIMC onlinemedia XML with:
<link name="VLC-Shares Collections" addr="http://IP_ADDRESSOFPC/vlc-shares/" />
this configures vlc shares
and it will appear when you look through online media
The "google machine"will explain the details/benefits... most of which I dont understand..Lol
