Hi there. Im new to this forum and need a little help. I have a VAG 12.12 cable with VID_0403 & PID_FA24. If i run a fresh install of VCDS with cable plugged in, it says valid/registered. As soon as I plug into car it goes to Unregistered.
In device manager it says Ross-tech direct USB interface and not the FFFFFFFFFF that ive read before. Im guessing the cable has been fried and was wondering the best way to go? Ive read posts before about flashing Eprom etc but cant seem to find a defined step by step method including which software to use for flashing. I am good with computers but just a little lost in the process. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

Hello.
Here are flash dumps for latest VAG-COM original + flash dump of China clone FW 1.96 with protection chip. All firmwares are disassembled. It's quite easy to decrypt HCC196.bin (old 512 byte bootlader) from install directory. I'm working on other tools such as FLASH and EEPROM dumper via USB, so it can be read even with fuse bits set.
BTW according to FW source code - fuse bits are not read by firmware itself, so it doesn't care if the fuse bits are set or not.

HCC196.bin is for old HW type (0x44) with PORTA.2 and PORTA.3 connected to GAL
HP196.bin is for new HW type (0x46) - not decryptable yet (no public). May be this type is used in China clone. CN Clone dump is not the same as HCC196.bin.

As I know - protection chip doesn't protect ATMega (according to schematic I don't know how it can protect it) but is used as a "key" for cracked VCDS distributed with VAG-COM. It communicates with VCDS loader through RTS/CTS pins of FTDI. If VCDS loader finds the protection chip, it then unlocks communication with ATMega, creates d1-d3 files and starts VCDS.

I haven't seen newer solution then 11.11.5/12.12.0 shared in public ( use google )
The good solution you will not find in China or in public web shops or sold in forums in market place
This solution will be killed sooner or later
Flash = reprogramming - search how to reprogram VCDS in forum you will get what you need

There is way to tead and write the MCU ny Usb w/o Open it.
But you cannot see if uts Atmega or NEC.
I had a dump extracted from a clone w/ NEC and I flash it in a clone w/ Atmega.
Just to check if this one are diffrent

Now, I have 2 cables with Hd2 and I tried your dumps: interface test was ok, as you posted earlier, but did you test it on the car?

It is necessary a new ept file for RL? I use old ept that works with 14.10.0 .

I tried with a Fabia 2007 and I received several comunication errors: autoscan, each module, mass. blocks etc. it works to some point and than it crash.


So, I use xtremeburner fusebits
CD DC F9 CC, installed 16.8.0, copied cracked.exe in installation folder, delete main shortcut from the desktop and launch programm using cracked.exe .
I did something wrong?

I think cracked.exe file is not that "perfect" to make things work as should. Probablly @kolimer needs more time the make some changes for that dump to work with 16.8.0 . , if it is his work, otherwise he shares what he got without test it and this is it...

Mate in your case MFT version you are using a loader because the serial its blacklisted and when younare using the original exe file your tool will show you unregistred.
If a tool it has the rght serial not blacklisted then its doesn't matter if it is with BL/BM ( old style ) or RL/RQ ( nrw style)
To flash the tool
- flash with MProg the FTDI using ept for BL/BM ( vid/pid 0403/FA20 )
- Connect your AVR Programmer to Atmega ISP pins ( MiSO/MOSI/SCK/RESET) and GND
- Power the circuit ( VCDS ) with 12V ( from car if you wish ) on OBD pins (16 for +12v and 4-5 for GND )
Use the eeprom that you have and fuse bits CD/DC/F9/CC or FF
Tthis is it
Well I forgot if you have STC in circuit as you said you need to insolder the STC and the other two components

The 16.8 cracked software still crashes (comm error). The 12.12 and the 11.11.5 sw say license not found. I used the 0403 FA20 config and Flash1.96_HW1.bin and the eeprom (HEX 2011/03/01 12h19:58). My cable consists ATMEGA162, GAL, 93c46, FT232BL na no ST. The cable worked fine with 1.84fw. I used ponyprog for programming ATMEGA, using the attached fuse settings. ATMEGA is connected to the GAL.

As i know, 15.7.0 and 16.8.0 CHN with STC use FA24.
15.7.0 has in my hand, saw eeprom, extracted vcds.exe for use without "stc protection'.
Worked ok. But with proper eeprom, not tried to "whitening" an old blacked serial.
Probably is the same in 16.8.0 EN CHN STC. Haven't yet one.

But..like more others CHN versions...

FTDI is a part of protection in VCDS
You damage it you need one with same Id.
But the Id is uniq snd tge rste to buy one with same ID its higher then to win in lottery
Tgis mean th the dump in the MCU Atmega is marriaged with the ID of the defective FTDI.
You did two bad steps
1. You open the case
2. You change tge FTDI by yourself
Ross-tech warranty is out in this case but they are the only one who can help you in this moment. No one can do it.
At leaxt if you want that tool to be a genuine one from now on.

Ok then if it has no waranty so you have nothing to loose
FTDI ID cannot be changed. It uniq. Thats why its used in the VCDS protection arhitecture and in other tools protections
You can read it from the defective FTDI if you can use read it by MProg.
Or you can buy more then 65900 pcs of FTDI RQ from same place to be sure that you can find one FTDI RQ chip with same ID
Mate take my advise and if you wanna still have a genuine tool then send it them back

I can't read defective FTDI, it burns down the power supply 3.3v-short to ground.

Use VCDS 11.11.0 loader if you have a RL interface. Remove rar extension from filepart of VCDS software.

Just to restore original 12.12.0 to a working condition what do we really need ??

Shoul ATMEGA be rewritten by 4 soldered wires or via USB also ??

You cannot change Unique ID of this chip as it's hardcoded. And afaik that ID is attached to you license.. even Ross-tech wont help you there :)

My cable stopped working a while ago. I cannot change long coding, only adaptation. When changing Long Coding it says coding accepted, but then the actual coding is never updated.

Your cable it has FTDI - RL (second picture very close to those 4 wires(usb) soldered to pcb.
It does not have Atmega, it is with NEC=CHINA= No chance to update (reflash) as I now, maybe this fact will change in the future..

About long coding- it must be vers. 12.12.0 - it is known that fact- coding saved, but at next visit coding not changed.


L.E. - it is very low quality- no GAL/ATF, no LM7805. ...do not waste your time, buy one with Atmega.

there is nothing to reflash.. just check what com port it creates in device manager.. set from 1 to 4 and set same in vagcom409.. and you good to go :) its just K line adapter..

That's why ironically said that. As I read in many forums, atmega162 has no fuses to disable those. So the worst this you can do is set it up to use and external clock. Providing a clock is sufficient to recover the chip, no need to have high voltage programmer

To update the cable or change the language first you need to check if you have an Atmega 162 chip inside (pictures in post 363). If so you can download the Kolimer V 6.3 activator and try to convert the cable via a usb or programmer.

Hi. I had the same problem in version 17.8.0 PL. So I used the older version 16.8.3 and 17.1.3PL. After entering newer versions 17.8.1 and 18.2.1PL, everything is fine. Long coding works normally. The colimer did the next V7.0 activator. So maybe try updating the cable. Of course, if you have ATMEGA 162.

Hello guys i ordered from Aliexpress 18.2.0 version loader v6 installed everything but when i open vcds loader in test says interface found, status "Not plugged in to car" when obviously it is tried on audi a3 2014 with windows 7 then tried with windows 10 and audi a3 2010 and another laptop with win7 and audi a5 2009 same thing Interface found "Not plugged in to car".

yes tried 3 diferent laptops 2 operating system and 3 cars during the test and test says Not plugged in to car i think its software issue but i cant find anywhere 18.2.0 on the interent to try again as i only tried with the software that came on the cd

Did you paste, (swapped) the V 6.0 loader into the program folder? If so then check again whether the plug is well connected to the car OBD II and the LED is green.
Alternatively, if you have Chip Atmega 162 inside, download the V7.0 loader and reprogram the cable to 18.9.0 EN version.

I wanna share with you an issue with a cable from obd2cartool.

I tried to make it worked using usbasp with dumps from 18.2 to 18.9.0 , using loader v.7 to v7.2 but no luck, after I connect cable to car works about 20 seconds and program freezes and it is necessary to disconect usb cable in order to connect again.

I tried on pc with win7 and 10, with Audi A4 , Golf mk6 , Caddy, same behaviour with all.

I used same dumps/loader/18.9.0 with an identical cable and worked ok, it is not about the reflash.

I try to solve things with obd2cartool client support but, at first they said they not sell HW 44 (see pics from they site), after a while they admit to sell it, but keep ...talking with no real help, to bad..for them.

Hi i also have a problem. I gained a unofficial cable 18.2.0 and stupidly updated it beflre rereading the ebay description. So ofcourse my cable is bricked. Its a good quality clone. But ive been led to believe a reflash could bring it bqcl to life. Does anyone have a walkthrough on this process ? Woth pictures too ideally. obd2cartool V2 has some different GAL logic. Get Kolimer loader 8.0 erase atmega, burn eeprom, flash and fuses. No need to set code protect against readout, just block rewriting boot block.. But you have to use 46 type files. Then you can upgrade via EE tool, but not needed. Tested with VCDS-Release-18.9.0-Installer_b164183bc43b6bcc95c75dded3dd634be4371ec3 .rar and Kolimer 8, V2 Clone with ATF16V8 in tssop and FT RQ. The versions with 7805 are probably not so bad, if you get a genuine ATF chip with correct content - its in the main topic. You have maybe to experiment a bit. Th culprit is some old PALCE or other crappy PLD, it is clearly seen its relabeled and has high power consumption, which overheats 7805 and mistunes xtal frequencies. Who knows what chips are genuine...for to be sure replace everything or spent a nice weekend building an own interface with known components.

Hi.
Unscrew the cable and check if there is CHIP ATMEGA 162, ATMELL inside. If it is, you can reprogram the cable to a higher version using USB or a programmer. If there is no ATMEGA 162, only NEC or ARM buy a second one, because Activator 19.6.2 EN will not help you.

You can also look for SW 19.6.0c EN, which works with cables on NEC, ARM.

First I'd like to thank you for the reply and appreciate your help much; would you please give me a list of tools required to reflash and where to get the dump file to program the atmeg; what happened to the cable was I thought a cloned cable an original one so, I went to ross tech and downloaded the latest software and ran it without any loader I was naive ; it seems to me that an original software got it disabled. I plaued with couple of tools that programmed the FTDI USB interface but I couldn't get to the atmeg controller even with a boot loader to program.

The problem is that the link is out of service and I can't get the installer file for vcds 12.12 512bits, does anyone have it available to share please? or is there another solution other than using that installer?

Hello, I'm trying to get my cable working, so I'm here to try with your dump files.
Firmware version 1.96
VCDS 18.9.0
FT232RL - VID 0403 PID FA24
PALCE 16V8H -7JC/5

Cable recognized by the software but corrupted in someway in an old eeepc laptop with XP and never connected to internet nor updated.
I've successfully tried to flash Atmel162 via FT232H ISP programmer and command line, but I didn't know about the e2prom & fuse roles, so the interface can't pass self test.
Now I've understood that I must flash with firmware and eeprom files at the same time.
I know I must read a bit more here before try other things, but can I flash old version in my interface, since I would connect to my old Audi A3 8L1 year '02?
Or maybe I can find the eeprom hex file somewhere?

Hello!!! There are VCDS 18.9 (soft + dump ATMEGA162+photo of fuse settings), if somebody needs :)

I was looking for this version and found it, thank you very much!
I though I was lucky, but unfortunately... flashed with avrdude as I normally do with other Atmel uController (Arduino's world) and everything seems to be ok, but the led stay off when connected to the car, no connection. Uhhh

What goes wrong? Am I missing something? It is all so unclear and chaotic all about vcds cables for me...

EDIT: if I re-flash the previous 1.96 firmware I've downloaded yesterday, the led works normally: red after interface plugged in and became green after a second, but still "Failed self test"

Problem solved.
After a lot of frustration the interface is alive and I share with you what works for me:
for my interface the firmware that now is running was found in the downloaded VCDSLoader_v9.2 folder: (EDIT: the link is https://sidicer.lt/files/VCDSLoader_v9.2.zip )
Flash1.96_HW_0x44.bin
eepromavr_HW_0x44.bin

So the command to upload the files on the atmel chip from the command line (linux in my case), by an usb-isp converter (in my case an FT232H which is good for me) is:
[fabio@fabio-PC ~]$ avrdude -p m162 -c FT232H -e -U lock:w:0x3f:m -U efuse:w:0xf9:m -U hfuse:w:0xdc:m -U lfuse:w:0xcd:m -U flash:w:Flash1.96_HW_0x44.bin:r -U eeprom:w:eepromavr_HW_0x44.bin:r

At this point, following the VCDS installing guide, like the four days gone, the interface didn't work again, but... I decided to make a thing:

This is the "official" instructions about "How to install VAG 18.9 in the PC":

4. First time to plug cables into the PC, wait a while to run VCDSLoader.exe. Click Options to run the self-test, and then click Save Data.
5. Turn off all vcds software, (***) plug in your car, and run VCDSLoader.exe again.

*** NO! Before plug the cable in your car, we also need to disconnect USB from computer port!
Then, connect the interface to the OBDII port, than reconnect the cable to the USB and finally run VCDSLoader.exe

After this second test, the interface was finally found, connected to the car and... registered!
