Freelander lhd converted

I am after a motor to take to Sweden for my own use initially, and then maybe to flog for a profit as cars are bloody dear in Sweden.
Years ago Left Hand Drive cars used to be cheaper than the RHD equivalent. Squaddies bringing over cheaper european cars and stuff.
Now try to find a left hooker, they command more money than RHD.

I seen a couple of companies advertising conversions on Fleabay, ?750, to convert a freelander 1996 to 2006 models.

What do you garage guys reckon? Are freelanders any good? any faults to look out for? what about the conversion?
Any tips I will be very grateful for. Will be diesel model I would chose also.

Would be inclinded to get one with the steering wheel on the correct side.

Just incase it causes problems with insurancse and DVLA.

If something dropps off, just as you pulling into urkea Jonsons drive to deliver shampoo, what you going to do?

Would be inclinded to find a 'booze cruise' club who go over to France - have a look see if they can buy one - fill it with boose?.

You pay for it's fuel and purchase they bring it back?

There used to be a compny "left hand drive car company" ? nothing but LHD.

2nd hand cars are quite expensive in France, better to try Belgium or germany IMO.

Have a google for 'leboncoin' to look at frog stuff, mobile.de for german/polish/other. Expect to see a good 2 grand euros difference :-)

Agree with this. Don't buy car from France. They don't look after them as well.
Conversion may (will) cost you more than LHD car.
Freelander with BMW diesel engine would be a good choice.

It's not conversion to LHD. Its just a facelift and i would stay away from year 1996 Freelander. It might have 2 liter diesel engine, but not a right one. Basically it isn't bad, but there will be a "little" problem with spare parts for the engine. If i remember right they were a bit expensive.

Some good info tho Larue. I see there are at least 2 diesel engines. The Td4 and a cheaper, year 2000 model, 2.0Di, or XDi
The 2.0Di isn't the one you mentioned is it?

I did have a look at mobile.de, looks quite interesting, but still more expensive on first glance than in UK.
Leboncoin I struggled to browse while in Sweden, even my ip blocker struggled to view it so I gave up in the end, plus seeing one C5 for ridiculous amount of money.

I misunderstood your first post about that conversion.Sorry about that. You are right. I wouldn't think it's so cheap to convert it to LHD.

I wonder if it is more straight forward with these Freelanders. I had emailed another company about converting a Peugeot 407 and was quoted ?3000.

Although looking at pics 4 and 6 the leather seats appear to be more worn on the left hand side. So if this is supposed to be a conversion from RHD to Left, then I am sceptical.

I dunno, it may be possible but they're charging ?400 for 3 days' work, including parts (new steering rack for example?). I *think* the dash might be swap over-able on those and so that's a saving, but I'm not convinced that the bulkhead won't need modifying to move the pedal box etc. and it's kind of integral to the structure of the car? Is there anything on any landy owners forums about this conversion?

Also, when you come to register it you'll likely need a certificate of conformity from the original manufacturer which will state that it's a RHD car and, if Ulrikaland is anything like here they won't like that one bit.

Agree with Larue, UK is still probably cheapest for motors .. but .. as you've noticed there's a significant market now for LHD stuff there (everyone watching Homes in the Sun and buying cars for their holiday homes etc.) so the prices have gone up.

There are bargains to be had though but Land Rover/Jag etc. are more expensive in Europe - maybe consider something made over here (audi/bmw/merc etc.) Germany is full of car lots packed with bimmers and stuff...

I did read an old thread in landyzone forum. They slating off someone who had suggested converting for LHD to RHD. I thought they were ignorant buggers tbh, some of them anyway.
I am gonna go see a place that has some converted landrovers, and also converts them himself. I still might go down this route, but register it as a right hand drive first, and then convert it afterwards. I am convinced there are savings to be made.
