View Full Version : C4 Picasso handbrake/ESP/ASR fault

Hi,

I've got a C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi BMP 2008. Every time I power it up it displays "PARKING BRAKE FAULTY" and after a while "ESP / ASR FAULTY". Still everything works except for the automatic parking brake application and the service light is illuminated.

The only fault code that the ESP has is "ESP8.1 No communications with the engine management ECU Data invalid - Temporary - U1208".

It always shows up immediately even if erased with Lexia. It happens even with "key on engine off" so I guess it is not a matter of voltage dip during cranking. I have reset the BSI several times to no avail. Any clues?

Morjens!
This might be stupid to ask, but have you reset the parking brake? I had the same messages, and the reason was offset parking b. Reset does not require Lexia, I guess I found instructions from user manual... I don't have the car anymore.

Hi,

I removed all the BSI connectors and also the connector on the ABS pump/valve unit itself. Everything was fine, no oxidation.

I was probably giving misleading information in the first post: The fault U1208 can be erased and it stays away even if the power is cycled. Only starting the engine brings it back. I hooked up a battery charger to assist keeping the voltage up but it made no difference.

Thanks gyapi! The failure mode I have is the least of 3 possible, and it is described in the document. Basically everything works except automatic engagement of handbrake and hill holder. I could live with it but the warning chime and failure messages flashing on the display after every startup is a no-no considering MOT or trading the car.

I measured the canbus line resistance at ESP unit, BSI and engine ECU. It was solid 120 ohms, and apparently the communications work most of the time since the fault is intermittent. It says that the system tolerates 500ms blackout in the comms before activating a trouble code. It could be due to low voltage during cranking, but hooking up the battery charger did not help. Anything else to do before I start swapping ESP units? Is it possible to update the controller software with Lexia?

Still have this problem. Has anybody had any luck fixing such a fault?

If u get this code from ecu check CAN wiring

1) Is there ANY faults in the Indain?
2) Google that code (i think) it will take you to an INFERIOR website with a photo of loom behind battery.
3) DO suggest ANY faults in the indain you fix, rumor states this can happen, abs/tc/handbrake as one, rumor states abs gets upset if indain has limp-dick mode

Did you manage to fix this issue? I have same kind of problem in my C4.

On top of battery is a connector with 3 small wires, check these as they break and cause this fault

dont forget press thanks

My fault codes are:
U1305 Fault: absence of communication with the steering wheel angle sensor : No signal
C1310 Yaw sensor signal fault : internal fault

U1325 Fault: absence of communication with the gyrometer-accelerometer sensor : No signal
C1315 Transverse acceleration sensor signal fault : internal fault
C1502 Longitudinal acceleration sensor signal fault : internal fault

Display says "ESP/ASR faulty" and "Handbrake faulty".

Wiring problems? ESP/ASR/ABS ecu problem?

Err under them parameters, grab an xacto knife and cut a large hole in the center tunnel between t front seats.

legand has it (and can keep it) you got 4 wires, power & canbus.

see what yiu got bro, init

Wiring problems? ESP/ASR/ABS ecu problem?

Yes, wiring problems. One wire was faulty near ESP connector.

Yes, wiring problems. One wire was faulty near ESP connector.

Where is the ESP connector? And how did you find out that this wire was the cause of the problem?

In my case I had the handbrake fault/esp etc lights on. The engine was cutting out randomly as I was driving. I could only start the car when the errors showed up. Found problems with the wiring loom that is pushing off the battery box (bad design) toward the rear right as you look into engine - lots of corroded and broken cables that needed to be repaired. Whilst under the hood I disconnected the egr valve sensor (just behind the fuel filter) - it was held on with a small cable tie. There I found water in the connector. Left it disconnected and all is well (except for the pollution warning that I can live with until i get around to replacing sensor for m.o.t...) Hope this helps someone..

I just looked on a inferior site and found "if h/brake is giving fault, check EGR first". It may sound strange, but this guy knows his stuff so might be worth a try. good luck.

Like autoden said above I can confirm that a faulty Egr valve can cause this problem....I have learned the hard way on a 407 1.6 hdi with same fault code...:stung:
I Unplugged egr valve connector from the fitted egr valve and connected in a new egr valve (without fitting) and clear faults......If the fault(s) Inc abs faults clear then your good to go fitting the new egr valve...
If you can get your hands on a new (or good secondhand egr valve) then its worth a try..:)

Hello. I already got a car of this kind of damage and the brake works fine. This may sound silly what was causing this breakdown was the EGR. After changing the EGR fault disappeared. I hope this helps you.
