Hi guys!

Absolutely puzzled now...
The car in question is:
Vauxhall Astra H 1.6 2004 Engine Z16XEP

The problem is:

Sometimes you turn the key on, all lights ok on the dash, turn key to crank, and you can ear the relay clicking but nothing else.
This happens after the engine is cranking and cuts suddenly before start.
After that, the only way to get it cranking again is if:
battery disconnected and reconnected,
or
Engine ecu disconnected and reconnected,
or
CIM plug disconnected and reconnected,
or
leave the car alone with ignition off and key out for about half hour.

"This happens after the engine is cranking and cuts suddenly before start." - the starter makes a funny noise when cranking,
sometimes it goes till the engine start, and sometimes it turn the engine 2 or 3 revolutions and then cuts out... after that the above happens.

When this happens, i loose communication with the engine ECU, all other ECU's are reached.

I have already:
Tried a different engine ecu - the same
different under hood ecu - the same
both ecm and under hood - the same

when the starter cut out, the battery drops to about 8 volts
tried another battery - the same

I have stripped all the engine wiring looms, nothing visible.

When the ecu comms are re-established there is codes for misfire on all 4 injectors, and few for can nodes, and can comms.
All other ecus report no com with engine ecu (obviously...)
(I will upload a screenshot of the codes...)

I am about to replace the starter motor, although not convinced that this is the problem...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

M8 I had this. You need to change starter motor.this will cure your problem 100 per cent.electrical interference on cranking causes no comms with ecu. I had exactly same problems you describe. Starter was turning over good .took me days to find this fault m8.

dont forget to press thanks

I have spent days already trying to figure out the issue.
I will change starter and will report back.
Thank you for the quick reply!

Hi
Quick update...
The starter motor was indeed the culprit, although I ended have to replace the engine ECU. After that the car is running perfectly.
I believe the faulty starter motor somehow ended up damaging the ECU...
Below is a quick video I have made, showing how to program the "new" ECU, hope it can help others.

mine did the same thing yesterday. It was a loose earth on the ECU. easily fixed by tightening it back on

I've seen on these where dash doesn't light up - replaced engine fuse box which must of got water damaged.

And CIM module goes too
