New to this box, not sure of how to set recording to hdd, can anyone help? Would like a walk through with set up. Basically went to setup clicked through to recording and time shift, recording settings dropped down to timer recording location, clicked on internal flash, list inc hdd appears so clicked on that, came out of that and saved but still when I click on add recording it shows write error when recording Disk full. I'm sure I'm missing something. I'm sure I've read that the hdd needs initialising but can't see how to do it. Ps I've put a micro card in the side of box and still nothing so perhaps I've altered some settings😳

What size of hdd are you using and if you've already recorded to the flash (internal) then you will need to reflash the box to clear it but don't flash anything unless you have all the details you will need to put it right again

if you had a hdd lying about it wont be partitioned or formatted correctly (to linux ext 3 or 4) unless you have intitialised and formatted it using your box and menus
and as stated earlier, if you dont telll people enough information like image and version being used nobody can advise you , same as if you asked where reverse is on your car, ? but you dont give the make and model
edit, more like openATV , not open tv , or maybe openpli or openvix ? should be a version number too

It is but you will see the difference once setup.... & never look back
stick in there .....your on the best forum for advice.....i was in your boat 2 years back
seemed very Challenging...& i thought i would never get the knowledge to setup the box & get it running right
With plenty of help from members it became a breeze & 2nd nature
once you get the basics right....then you can start to load plugin's & then it get's even better
there is a lot you can do with the E2 systems that you cannot do with the cheap open boxes
Good luck & happy learning mate

To format and mount hdd on open atv press the blue button then scroll down to harddisk on the left hand panel then scroll right to initialisation and follow the on screen instructions. You scroll by using the arrows that surround the ok button on the remote. This will format and mount the hdd. You then restart the box using the shutdown menu (hold down the power button on the remote) once restarted the hdd will be ready to go. Just fir the record OpenAtv 5.3 is still in it's very very early release stages don't be surprised if it has some little bugs but keep it updated and you will be fine

Forget the part I mentioned about updating a 5.3 image. Like I said it is in very early stages and any OpenAtv 5.3 image produced before 31-03 will not update online and a full reflash is needed. But don't just jump into a full reflash unless you have certain details and are cabable of reinstalling said details in the correct place because that is a part we cannot help with. Everything else we can talk you through.

I never mentioned mount manager lol. OpenAtv will automount a single attached device as /media/hdd after initialisation (which was what i said to use) but choose /media/hdd as all your recording defaults use that as long as you have formatted hdd

Sorry I'm a bit confused pressed blue button and get quick launch menu on the left it give software manager, softcam, system, mounts, network,av setup, tuner setup, plugins. Mounts had been mentioned so went for that! Mount manager was red to use as hdd, green set up mount then choose where to mount /media/hdd then save then restart system. After reboot it's still when asking it to record it's as write error when recording? Doesn't know if this is anything but the only way I could get the hdd mounted was I'd it's formatted to ntfc, wouldn't accept exfat (win 10)

Here are my instructions again. You need to read them properly. Btw harddisk is on second page AFTER plugins

Hi, I'm new here and I've got a problem with an external HDD. My H2S doesn't seem to have an option to setup the disk so I set it up myself as follows. The disk is a Toshiba 320Gb 2.5" in a USB caddy.
I partitioned the disk into 270Gb and 50Gb partitions.
The 270Gb is FAT32 and the 50Gb is EXT4.
I used the setup menu to select the locations for recording and timeshift. The 270Gb partition usually shows up as sdb1 and the 50Gb as sdb2. I select the appropriate devices and everything seems to work ok, recordings record and pause/rewind works.
The next day I find that neither work and the sdba/2 devices have disappeared. A reboot and wading through the menus again gets it all working again. Sometimes the 2 partitions show up as something like MQ01ABD032 (partition 2).
What's going on here?

Single partition or mount the big partition /media/hdd and the small one /media/USB you might still get mount errors with two partitions though regardless of Mount settings

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. Should it just be one big EXT4 partition for both recording and timeshift? It will only accept a range of formats for timeshift (including EXT4 but excluding FAT32).
How do you go about mounting the disk as /media/hdd? I can't see any options in the menus to do that, do you have to get to the command line somehow?
By the way I'm a software developer with quite a bit of UNIX experience so the command line doesn't frighten me.....

Go through the disk initialisation wizard and choose ext4 then hdd if it asks. Most images nowadays will mount a single partition to /media/hdd by default

Sorry but I'm new to this machine and software etc.
Where would I find the information you're asking for? What is the "image" you mentioned?
When the machine reboots it says it's Wooshbuild something or other, is that what you mean?
My original post gave all the information under the "About" option in the menus. See below.

Never used whooshbuild but on open atv you get it by pressing the blue button, that brings up a new menu and you'll find it in there. Not saying it will be under the blue button but try the coloured buttons to see what they do lol

Hi happy_highlander, I found the mount menu under the blue button. I've deleted the small partition and created a full disk EXT3 partition and set it as hdd as you suggested. It seems to be working so far, I expect I'll find out tomorrow. Many thanks for your help, if you lived locally I'd buy you a pint.
