View Full Version : Audi A3 P8 Instrument Cluster Testing on Bench . Any help appreciated.

Been given a faulty Aud A3 instrument cluster to 'play ' around with on the bench. It's a P8 (single blue connector) and the fault is that it was working intermittently, then would shut off a few seconds after ignition switched on and the car would cut out. Now , it's just dead in as much as the clocks do not move on power up, except for a very slight 'kick' but that's it. I have it connected on the bench with a gateway and the gateway wake up connector connected but it is dead. When i press the left hand button in for a few seconds i do though get the white LCD displays come on with the mileage etc but nothing else on the central LCD panel.

As i get the mileage etc displayed i assume this is not a corrupt eeprom ? or am i wrong.

Any one have any ideas where to check first, this is my first cluster so it 's purely a learning exercise.
All advise ,tips appreciated.

Hi,

Your dashboard behaves as it should while connected on bench. It will not light up, because the wake-up signal comes out the J519 central electronics, and there is no seperate +15 termial cable, only 3 +30 and ground.

It is possible to light up this cluster on bench, however you need CAN translator and proper message to send every 200 ms on bus to dash stay light up.

Also if you turn the ignition on in the car and the clocks are "kicking" as you say and car is after MY2006, then the problem is corrupted data in Micronas processor.

Thank ungask for your reply

I did suspect that conditions were not correct for bench testing but with it being exactly the same symptoms as in the car i thought i would check on here.
What could i use as a Can translator ?, i have the Audi 1K0 907 530 B gateway connected to it,l i thought the wake up signal came from that even if it only briefly powered up ?

I have XProg & i understand it can read the Micronas MCU but where would i get a suitable file to write back and would that be just a burn & fit back to car or would it need further adaption. Are the EEPROM contents contents car specific or are they just Firmware flash (like O.S)

Cheers

You can read the Micronas by Xprog, but the bigger problem is to repair the flash content, best option for you would be to find someone with SMOK X-CAN and SMOK J-TAG, because these two combined can repair Flash on Audi Micronas.

If you don't know anyone with those tools, you can try sending readout from Micronas to SMOK support and ask them if they can repair it for you, but there are small chanses that they will do it if you don't speak Polish and give them call first.

Also you can post the Flash on forum too, maybe I or someone else can give a try repairing your flash.

And yes, EEPROM as well as FLASH contain car-specific data, so you can't simply swap then over without adaptation.

ungask, thank you very much your advice is really appreciated. Obviously not something i am going to resolve very quickly, i think a bit more reading/research and tools is required on my side.

Thanks to all for the replies, with the exception of the central electronics module (which i guess is the Bornetz in the link lupu_sandu posted) my connections are exactly as shown. I know the clocks should sweep to max on power up and then go back to rest but they don't do that, they just kick for less than a second and that's it. luppu i have searched and searched and yes there is a lot of info on here, i don't normally do clusters , it's a one off i was asked to look at in the hope it might just be a dry joint. If it was a corrupted eeprom then why would it have worked ok intermittently for a while and then suddenly die ? I suspect something else is at fault too, just would have loved to power this up on the bench like i do with BMW units.

Thanks again

Without bordnetz, dashboard will not move or light up!
With bordnetz connected as in previous post diagram you will have this:

I now have a BCM/Bordnets but it is the 8P0907063A model which has 3 connection sockets, this is different to the one in lupu_sandu's post whhich has 4connectors.

Does anyone have the connection details/pinout for the 8P0907063A module

Thanks in advance

Did few Fujitsu and Micronas dash with Lupu connection but as I remember had to change place Can-L, Can-H.

hello nogger1 i'm trying to do the same thing with an 8p cluster and the correct bordnetz for the cluster is also 3 plug like you said, I found this pinout, maybe we can help each other or some mote experienced guys can help us to decipher correct connections :)

as far as i know smok repair flash only after odo correction or...?

Hello,

I'm trying to connect my cluster on bench too, but I'm struggling with proper connection. I found out that when I connect T30/T31 pins (three of each) I should be able to press the left button to get mileage and date displayed.
My problem is that it doesn't work that way, after power up cycle:
- most of time it doesn't do anything
- sometimes it works as described in first post (making clicky noise after power on)
- sometimes random icon or icons pop up and goes of after seconds

Tried to connect on CAN but I get no frames. Tried different bus speeds, tried with and without 120ohm - no difference, no frames.

Is it me doing something wrong or cluster is dead/damaged?

That's how cluster "works": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNq9aXHHmiY&feature=youtu.be

EDIT:
After many tries, cluster is starting. It doesn't start everytime, I have to make 20+ attempts to start it properly. But I found out that there were 4 programming tries and 0 was successfull - could this be a reason for such behavior?

Hi
I have same problem with dashboard audi a3 8p 2009 year. Dashboard is black. I am trying to connect it on bench. I have connected dashboard and gateway but I do not know how to connect BCM/Bordnets - it is the 8P0907063 model which has 3 connection sockets. Can someone help with pinout to this BCM. Regards

Hi

I have solved my problem. Car starts. Dashboard works too. Problem was with BCM (I replaced it with second used module). Second problem was with power. There was no power in fuse box in car on fuse number 8 (fuse was good but was no power on fuse). Regards
