Firstly I?d like to say what a polite and courteous forum this is :)

I travel across Europe regularly and my 910 has done it?s job reasonably well, apart from going up in smoke once and the hard disk completely failing on another occasion.

After using cracked maps on my device for many years, I decided to take the plunge and Navcore 8.412.1236 as I wanted lane guidance as I often make a mistake or two on my long journeys due to confusion at motorway junctions etc.

Updating Navcore 8.412.1236 was relatively straight forward and almost everything is working perfectly including voice recognition, TTS and lane guidance etc.

However it does have a few hiccups and questions which I?d like to check with other users.

1) After resetting the device (e.g. after removing from PC dock) the screen corrupts for 10 seconds or so until my ?This device belong to:? screen appears and then behaves perfectly.

2) When connecting the PC via the dock, it just sits on the dock and waits for a while; reboots and then connects to the computer without asking whether I wish to connect.

3) When sitting on the windscreen dock and I switch off the ignition as expected it switches of after the countdown reaches 0.
On turning the ignition back on the screen stays blank for about 40 seconds, reboots and after the normal screen corruption has gone behaves normally until switched off again.

4) Normal whinging from TomTom Home as the Navcore doesn?t match the unit "You have an invalid version of TomTom application installed on your TomTom device. To use HOME you need to install the correct version of the TomTom application" after hitting ok or closing the window it happily carries on installing map share updates etc.

As expected the RF remote no longer works, but would a Bluetooth remote from a newer TomTom work e.g. x30 or x40 ?

Is there a patched Navcore 8.412.1236, setconfig.txt or Outsourced.8412 configuration that fixes any of these bugs.

I suspect I?ll just have to live with them, but you can?t complain as it?s free :)

TA everso :)

Thanks for the info dwarez,

From what I've read Navcore 8.560.348422 works well on the older x10 units.

Some users have reported problems with the RDS-TMC trying to run when the antenna is not connected, but I'll give it a bash.

P.S. What are the differences between 8.560.348422 & 8.412.1236?

Cheers

Oh B******S!

In trying Navcore 8.560.348422 I updated my bootloader to v5.5229

I'm lucky that still working fine, but I miss the drums on a reset :(

I believe you can't downgrade the bootloader back to the original :(

Navcore 8.560.348422 was a complete failure.

I couldn't get TTS or voice recognition working and the dock and windscreen mount problems were the same :(

Remember before editing anything on Your TomTom You have to make BACKUP!!!

Then You can simply copy and paste Your missing files!

I always make backups, so no probs there :)

However, backingup won't do you any good if you update your bootloader.

If you brick your unit (which is highly possible) then your only option is to send it back to TomTom and pay for it's repair.

You also can't go back to an older bootloader, so updating your bootloader is like russian roulette.

So best not to do it....however.

I've just restored my 910 back to how it was before I updated from the official Navcore and I swear it's running better with the new bootloader so no complaints here :)

It now displays the nice new TomTom logo on reset and doesn't blast out those annoying drums :)

I'll have a tinker with Navcore 8.417.1255 when I have some spare time.

If it wasn't for the USB and Docking gremlins I'd be sticking with navcore 8.412.1236 as I need lane guidance.

Cheers :)

With bootloader v5.5229 my 910 definitely boots up and shuts down much faster!

Just a quick update :)

Navcore 8.417.1255 runs well, but the USB dock and car mount issues are still there.
Perhaps this is a problem I’ll just have to live with if I want to run a non-official Navcore.

The Loquendo was awful and raspy like it’s using a lower sampling rate or something.
Replacing the LoquendoTTS folder with the original 910 version fixes that problem.

Anti-aliasing of the maps is not as aggressive as the other Navcore’s, so in 3D mode the map look so much better.

TTFN :)

I have now tried a whole host of different navcores, but they all exhibit the USB dock & Windscreen mount issues.
I would imagine the problems are due to the way in which the windscreen dock contains most of the external interfacing hardware for the 910.
Most other models of TomTom contain most of the connections e.g. USB, power & serial (3.5mm jack) within the main unit.

Some users have reported their 910?s locking up after a couple of hours of use with this navcore, so I?ll have to wait and see.

The loss of remote is a pain (but this is to be expected).
I don?t have a bluetooth remote to test to see if it would work.

RDS-TMC works very well, but you no longer get the rotating orange pacman icon whilst searching.
Instead you get a green arrow moving over the car icon unit a frequency is found carrying traffic data, then the icon turns to the classic green circle.
Also the traffic menu does not display the current FM frequency in the bottom left hand corner.
Instead it now says now says ?Looking for traffic signal? and ?Up-to-date? when data has been received.
However these above differences may be by design rather than bugs.

The anti-aliasing of the maps is a very unnecessary use of CPU time.
I would rather have a sharp, precise and very readable sharp display than a soft edged, fuzzy one.
The display is unclear at night if you?re using a dark scheme with reduced colours.
Shame there?s no option to turn anti-aliasing off.

Which navcore versions do no use anti-aliasing?

Bootloader v5.5229 seems to have improved the USB and the overall performance of the unit.

Bye?
