first i am not the best in english :) as you will see abow ,
i am new in the automitive buisnes,i heard that VCDS is a great program for Car diagnostics ,so can some one tell me how to instal it maybe with a guide from A to Z i would be very thankfull

you should do it on win xp, in ftprog select eeprom for your ft232 then click erase after that select vcds eeprom and click write, unplug and plug again, it should be recognized as rosstech hex-can

If you had 10.6 software installed, you might need to reinstall windows. It will keep killing your interface!

Sorry for the questions but my cable is now dead.

You can wire directly a programmer (ISP programming) into the GAL only if the GAL is an ispGAL. If not, you must dessold it and program it externally.

Here you have two cheap GAL programmers:

post a picture of your interface (pcb), you definitely need to re-flash atmega and maybe some other components to remove

even i try to erase the ft232rl with ftprog under WIN XP.
but when i select the eeprom i make a right click an the eeprom chose erase and now following error occur what is may fault. see attachment

Flash order: first write ftdi eeprom with appropriate dump for ft232rl or bl, use mprog or ftprog acordingly. For this you don't need any soldering, just connect interface to usb port (all this is very well explained in tutorial)

second: connect wires on your atmega like in tutorial and supply power to interface, open ponyprog choose first flash file (extension .hex) then choose eeprom file (also .hex extension) program it. Forget about .bin file, use arash dump with two files

Hmm, try function autoscan, if that goes well i mean if you don't get message "this function require licensed interface", then you are OK. I sincerely doubt that your cable was cured

Don't use it with higher version, be happy with 908, i am very glad that you managed to work again bravo :congrats:

Maybe i have to do same as Nemesiz12 because i to upgraded it to 10.6 via roshtech site and same thing hapened to me.
with 908 it never activated/registered then i upgraded to 10.6 and then cable was like unknown device USB to serial.
Then uninstaled the driver and 10.6
after a pc reboot installed 908 and the drivers and cable was recon as roshtech, but cannot activate, always says says you need licenced interface....
Any sugestions?

First remove stc chip like i marked in pic then you will probably need to reflash ftdi eeprom after that reflash atmega with 908 dump (flash and eeprom) configure security bits and you will be good to go. I had good experience with that kind of hardware.

forgot to say that after uninstall and then install 908 with drivers cable detecs as "ross-tech hex or key usb interface" and if i go to ABOUT in 908 it says "Dongle-only version--not activateble" before doing TEST and not pluged in car.
After doing TEST and save and plug to car it gives a serial and still say unregistered/shareware.

Will try remove chip monday and give a feedback.

Gonna give up now anyway as my car needs the newer software as 908 don't talk to the modules. GAL is an issue.

I have bought 106 Chinese cable. It works with VCDS106 (shipped with cable) and communicates with my car without problem. But it also says "Unauthorized/Anauthenticated" version in About dialog.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I'm quite a new with VCDS and didn't play a lot with it, so I don't actually know if there are some restrictions while the program is "Unauthorized". The only thing i have noticed is that descriptions for option bits are not shown while trying to read and interpret their meanings.

Do this procedure everytime before you run the VCSD softwear, 1 Plug the interface into the car
2 Plug the interface into the USB
3 Run the softwear.
If you close the softwear, before to run again, please do the procedure again, step by step.

If you flashed atmega with 908.0 dump then you can use VCDS 908, if i helped you just hit thanks button

Quick Update:

Both interfaces are now recognised as Ross-Tech etc etc VID 0403 and PID FA20.

Initial testwith vag com 908 show interface found but not plugged in the car.

Once I plug it in the car it's not found.

remove it, close the program, plug it back in the usb and run the program will discover it again just fine.

Any ideas?

I really don't know but for me this message "SHORT to +12" sounds like a short circuit in K1 LINE.

Also the transceiver MCP2551 or the CAN controller MCP2515 can be damaged.

(some clone cables use tranceivers and CAN controller from other brand thus the reference should be different)

Check your cable for any short circuit to 12V.

I did one by myself from a ross-tech idea. I'm using it before plug the tool into the OBD II socket. It has bicolor LED green/red. When you have a short to +12V the Led become red, when everythings ok the led is green. One of my friend it happend to have an ABS issue and that it made a +12V short too)

Then it stopped working alltogether.

i made it my self little bit different, more raw you can say, it's just male obd2 plug with 2 wires connected to pins 4 and 7 terminating a diode led, if led lights then don't plug diagnostic interface ie. you have 12 V on k-line

I use it in every car not just on VAG one.
You never now and I saw a lot of demaged tools.
So never know what gone hapend.
If I'm using the Vag-Saver , I saved ( like when u use condom )

Mprog is for flashing FTDI eeprom.
You need to reprogram atmega with other tool for example ponyprog, read all posts and you will find the way how to do that.

Just to keep in touch...
First i removed the STC chip and pluged to car...cable recon as serial...uninstalled and installed driver and cable recon as ross...still shareware.
Then reprogramed again FT232BL and cable now is not recon in Windows XP.
Will try to reprogram atmega and tell you result later...

I just can't solder the 4th pin on the atmel. I don't have so thin wire. The rest I found where they bridge on the board and soldered the wire there. The 4th one.... Is probably not connected anywhere.

Thats correct...4.th pin is reset pin and not all time connected on pcb...need solder to atmega direct.

You need flash atmega again,and take of the stc chip...

Quick Update:

Both interfaces are now recognised as Ross-Tech etc etc VID 0403 and PID FA20.

Initial testwith vag com 908 show interface found but not plugged in the car.

Once I plug it in the car it's not found.

remove it, close the program, plug it back in the usb and run the program will discover it again just fine.

Any ideas?

you are using wrong software for your atmel Dump. There are several diferent VCDS soft.

For example i have 2 HEX USB cable, from different company, and when i try to use one cable with other VCDS soft, it show me message like on your PC. CHECKED

Ftdi is a chip inside the interface and is named FTDI232RL or BL or BM. You need driver if you like to have a comunication between you computer and the interface.
Ftdi Chip drivers you find here, it is the last one.

For the newer VCSd you need other kind of interface, you need an HEX-CAN interface.
For your interface you need just that softwear I told you.
BTW don't worry it is normal to ask if you want to learn something.

Hi, when I do this I get interface not found though it finds the virtual comport, I followed the instructions on the disc first and installed vagcom drivers (stupidly) but I'm sure Ive removed them. Interface a brick? Its blue china usb kkl.

Blue cable uses only ftdi drivers 'cause it's not advanced interface like hex-can with Atmega so that "vag-com drivers" you installed won't do any harm, you probably need another software version. I suggest vagcom 311.2 , 409.1 vcds lite, vw tool etc...I forgot you need to select correct com port

If you got this message "interface not found" while you were connected to a car then you probably have lm393 comparator faulty or broken transistor for k-line

First of all: thanks all of you for the useful tips till now. I have a Chinese clone (FT232BL) and yesterday I started upgrade to 908 version (from 805.0).
All went well. I removed SCT chip, transistor and resistor, flashed MCU with new flash and EEPROM (Arash) and at the end I changed flash on FTDI. All went well according to plan (and tutorials) :congrats:

Now, when I install VAG-COM 908.0 it says: Error, cable not found.

When I test the same cable on 805.0, it works well. If I check FW version (on 805.0) it says: 1.81, so, the upgrade went well. The same problem appears on 10.6.0 Software...

What could be wrong?

First i removed the STC chip and pluged to car...cable recon as serial...uninstalled and installed driver and cable recon as ross...still shareware.
Then reprogramed again FT232BL and cable now is not recon in Windows XP.
Will try to reprogram atmega and tell you result later...

ok finally had time to flash atmega.
After that cable was ativated...but...if i desconect it and connect again laptpo says device not recon...but if i connect cable to another laptop that did not connect to car it is recon as ross.
Everytime i conect and disconect from car laptop loses driver info and cable info.
format and install xp and all ok for one use again, same problem after disconect.
Each time i disconnect cable from laptop have to format and install xp.
any suggestions for this?

Check eeprom 93c46 maybe you need to replace it, also you need to check is there a power surge on usb port or you have some short connections on pcb

Dump the BM works differently than dump of RL. Since 2008 (805.X) VCDS.exe monitor whether the HW with BM or RL soon finds that there is BM and dump it in RL evaluate the test as negative

I have two modules for test, airbag with crash data stored (golf 4) and immo box (golf 3), you just need to connect pins 4-7-16 (- gnd,k-line, + 12V) to your interface and select it in program, you can also buy obd2 female connector so you have proper connection without wires sticking out, i forgot to add you need 12 v power supply

Searched on this forum and found dump update and flashed all posible AVR and FTDI flash and eeprom combinations, removed STC chip, resistor and transistor re, re re flashed like said in all these posts.... no results. the only thing that I didn't test to flash GAL16V8 because i don't have a programmer. the problem is that now my interface is unusable.... and i need it. Here are attached pics of pcb and errors that i receive with vcds.... in last case .... maybe someone have dumb of 812.4 ? because i didn't make backup...

As well as i can see in pics you didn't remove components (stc chip etc..) and you don't have CAN shown in interface test, and you probably didn't flashed atmega correctly. Also there is no need to reprogram GAL on this kind of interface.

VAG-COM 4x can't be upgraded because it hasn't an ATMEGA.

Only 5x and prior version can.

i'm planning to get a diagnostic cable for my 2007 vw gti, i have searched ebay for some vcds interface, i wonder if 409.1 kkl usb good? or some ross tech vcds vag software better?

I think you're confused!

I am not quite sure about what are you trying to say... but if you want a dump with fuses, forget it. You need to program first the FLASH+EEPROM and then you set the fuses.

Why? Because when you read the dump (READ ALL) you just read the FLASH+EEPROM. The fuses aren't read.

You need to read and program fuses using "Configuration and Security Bits" (on PonyProg).

The connection with the car works fine but whenevery I try to make autoscan it stops in the same certain point and says that you need to register. Even tho it says that its fully registered. When I try to make long coding it says the same thing. Yesterday I got it working for a while that it didnt say about register in long coding but the changes didnt stay.

You didn't understand, you have bad dump in you interface that's why you can't do any advanced operations, you need to reflash atmega with new dump.

1. Buy original (automatically updates to latest versions)
2. Get latest dumps and reflash atmega (Read whole thread and you'll found how to do that)
3. Give to somebody who have files and know how to do that

But 805 version seems to be too old (2008 year) for some modules on my Golf 6. Running 805.4 on it destroys the interface again :(

As from me:

Maybe your cable is the crappy china version that uses the FT232RL. If it's the case my package won't help you. You need to use animebot solution.

Any VAG-COM / VCDS cable that uses an ATMEGA can be upgraded. If it's based in the FT232BL use my package above (post 453). If it's based in the FT232RL I'm not the right person to help you, yet.

I do not own any file. I just made a compilation of files that will help you out.

The package includes a help file made by animebot.

The ATMEGAS's FLASH can be reflashed via USB. However the ATMEGA's EEPROM... I don't know if it can be reflashed via USB.

Believe me, for now forget the USB reflashing. Build your own LPT programmer or buy an USB programmer. Then play with your programmer and VCDS cable.

Later I can explain you the USB reflashing ;) But you will need a programmer no matter what.

Hi, first you have to findout what is faulty.. Your programmer or your atmega.. maybe you set wrong fuses (clock fuses) and now you atmega doesn't start.. in this case you have supply clock for it... but if you can't program brand new atmega then your programmer is faulty..

finally I have made working hex-can cable with 805 dump from angelx431. Thanks to all for help. But I have another question, please, can anybody tell me, where can I find the crack for vcds 805 or 908. I suppose, that the serial number is saved in atmega, but i need to generate activation code.
Or I can use dump from KenshinPT, but the problem is the same. I have only unlicensed version of vcds. Thanks

if you had good dumps(eeprom) and not cracked soft it should automatically show as fully registered/actived..

The product vag 10.6 china clone arrived in the morning. It looks good, but i have a problem with software instalation from the CD i received. During the installation process vcds software 10.6 <and others in the CD> an error with vsds.exe file has appeared, and i could only press "ingore" to continue the installation. after that vcds.exe hasn't created and the program didn't start.

Is it possible to download the newest software form http://www.ross-tech.com (http://www.ross-tech.com/) in version 10.6.3 and install, because with this version installation process is complete and vcds.exe starts normally without interface, or i will damage it??

Do you have any experience with that??

You have to make separate device (square wave generator) about 1MHz clock and supply it to XTAL1 pin. You can make that generator with NE555 timer chip.. or with other atmega
for example i wrote code for ATMega8 and its generating about 1MHz clock on 2 PIN (PD0)

in attached file is hex file for atmega8 (no need to change fuses, factory fuses is ok)

Uninstall your AV first and then including the VCDS folder in the exception of your AV.
For couple weeks all AV's erase this VCDS 10.6.0 cracked version.
So do this and try to install again.

That message will always pop-up because 10.6.0 is out dated.

Just click X (cross) to turn off the pop-up message and you're done =)

Don't EVER update the software to a newer version or your cable will die :) You can always resurrect it if you have good dumps.

You have pretty unusual hardware, definitely remove STC chip, try to track does any resistor connects between atmega and stc, if does remove it, no need to flash GAL just flash atmega

No problem at all you maybe have CAN but when you test the interface will not show CAN-OK, just in the new car after 2005.
I saw this just on, let say PASSAT 2008
So don't worry you can conect to the CAN.

Everything is fine with your interface :)
Your Skoda is being used for diagnostick K-Linje only.In this case you will see "CAN-Not ready"
