I am in the process of setting up my Mastertech scanner to work on Toyotas and noted that a VIM (Vehicle Interface Module) is required in between the data cable and the connector. What exactly does this piece do? Does it switch the lines or something? Will I not be able to use my Mastertech on Toyotas without it?

There are 2 Toyota VIMs:

One is used with Toyota TDCL cable for accessing selected ECT ABS CCS A/C and Airbag systems on some models.

The other is CAN VIM for newer car with CAN protocol.

Without the above VIMs you can still use your MT scanner to access most modules which not requiring the VIMs!

Hope this helps!

TDCL Cable p/n 02001642
Check Cable p/n 02001644
VIM p/n 02001929
VIM p/n02003211 CAN the one I use with updated firmware
OBD2 Cable p/n 02001969 this is the old part number, Bosch has since updated the number.

It is tricky updating the firmware, do it thru the tester when it prompts you, but remember it will prompt you to go back so once you have the version you want..leave it alone--cancel the update process with different card use. If i remember the CAN firmware update is on the latest Toyota card. Version 1.5 is what I am using. Can be found under F-9-setup, then scroll to CAN--or select 0

I noticed that the tdcl cable has a different pin count than the data cable. The vim is pretty expensive I will have to save up I guess.
