Hi guys,
Can someone advise how do we figure out or reset the root password for the DM500C?
I have the setup PIN (The 4 digit numerical code thing) but can't seem to get in via FTP.
I've tried the default root/dreambox but that does not seem to work.
Thanks!
K.

if your set is dm500c, default user is root, password is dreambox.
in order to ftp, you need to set the box ip address which you can set by using remote control, menu, setup, network. (remember to disable the DHCP so that you can key in you prefered box ip)

Thanks for your comments.
I don't have any problem finding the IP and to FTP in, its the login and password that is giving me a problem.
The default root/dreambox does not work, which is why I'm asking if there's an alternative method.

can you access downloads via the blue button, if you can then download tuxbox commander in the addons section and you can reset your password to that
You can reset your dreambox password using dreambox remote:
1.install tuxbox commander using addons button
2. Start tuxbox comander
3.go to in /var/etc/ and open the file passwd
4.press 4 on remote to go into edit mode.
The first line is root:*****:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh
where the ****** delete it (by using remote arrows to move cursor right and then pressing volume minus)
delete *** until upto :0:0:root
and press ok and exit -> save
the first line should look like this after the edit
root::0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/shthen log in with user root and password leave empty

That's something that I hope to avoid doing until the last resort; don't want to mess up the channels setup and everything done already.
Reload software will reset the passsword .

Hi Ansem, thanks for your detailed comments:
When I press the blue button, it brings me to a Setup page, where I key in a 4 digit PIN.
Seems like there is no "downloads" option (I'm using a PLI image).
What I can find however is Software Management Services, similar to that found in this link:
PLi? Images website - PLi? Wiki: E1Software (http://www.pli-images.org/modules/wiki/index.php?wakka=E1Software)
Is this the place to get the addon Tuxbox commander? Or that doesn't apply to PLI images?
Also, for my set, when clicking on Downloads, I get brought to this screen (which is the second half in the link I put above):
http://www.pli-images.org/images/wiki/000847_software.png
Am I supposed to click on "Download Latest Menu"? Not quite sure if this will screw anything up.
Thanks for your help and hope to hear from you!

Dear Ansem,
Thanks again for helping.
I did try this but encountered another problem, which I also tried to seek help in this other thread (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f34/guide-connecting-your-dreambox-internet-175/index5.html#post977616) more relevant to that issue; its quoted here as well just in case you could help me with this.
Is there any other way to test whether my DM500C is properly connected to the Internet?
Tried using this guide to connect the DM500C to the Internet; everything seems to work fine, ie DHCP is ticked; when I go to the router's admin page, I can see thE Dm500 being assigned an IP.
Only problem is, I was trying to click on Software management > Download Latest Menu, and I get an error box saying that it was trying to connect to downloads.pli-images.org [127.0.0.0] and then "server is down or you have no internet connection".
Where did I go wrong? It seems from the error message that the DM500C cannot resolve the IP address for downloads.pli-images.org and hence resolved back to localhost 127.0.0.0. How do I solve this problem?
Nameserver is set to the router's ip automatically by the router when DHCP is ticked.

Your box is connected. The problem is your supplier change the default root and dreambox login. Thats why you cannot access it. Hope it clarifies. By the way, I have the same problem but I flash with a new image, ftp key files and redo the channel list. Now my box went back to default.

@Kerean, can you try to telnet to the box and see if you get the login screen
if you do then im guessing downloads have been disabled within the image on the box
if so then your best option is to re-flash

The person who supplied you the box knew that you would try to download the tuxbox commander to recover the password and has delibertely blocked the download menu to prevent you getting the required information. I think you are probably wasting your time.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
Based on what I read here, it seems that the usual recommendation to recover FTP login details is to use TUX Commander; yet to do so requires the downloading of a menu which everyone says requires the FTP login details to begin with.
That seems to be a rather circular problem.
How do I tell if "downloads" have been blocked on the box? I could access the item (ie it doesn't come up with an menu error) but only says I can't connect to downloads.pli-images.org [127.0.0.0]. Is the FTP login/pass required for such a connection? Or is it really a DNS resolution problem or otherwise, some internet connection problem (maybe my box isn't connected to the internet as it should have been).
Thanks!

possible !
try to telnet to the box, you dont need the password to confirm if the box is connected to the net or not, when you try to telnet in you should get a login screen asking for user/pass....
if you get that far then assume box IS connected to net and downloads HAVE been disabled

i got problem accessing my box. sometime i can connect easily, sometimes, it just wont connect. I am not sure why. I restart my pc and dreambox many times to make sure it can detect but in the end, still inactive box.
I tried many methods. I assign ip to my box, if not i let my router assign a ip. But it just wont detect. Is it wrong method, wrong cable, hardware issues?

Hmm that's an idea, but means I need to fiddle around with port forwarding and use ANOTHER pc on another network to do the telnet via external ip; else if I just use the internal ip that wont' be conclusive rite.

i couldn't connect through ftp. the password does not seem to be dreambox or blank. my box could not update it's menu so i could not overwrite the password.
i'm thinking of getting a crossover, but would it update only it's flash? what about updating it's channels with the null modem cable.
or could it be i'm not connecting right with my wireless modem? i can access the dm500 on my pc with it's ip address? but i don't understand about setting the DHCP?
please help, thanks

I still can't change the ip address for DCC to connect but I can only change the gateway address.
