You have not loaded any firmware on the box if you haven't passed this screen..
http://www.greatdvb.com/forum/resources/picture2-fix-openbox-s10-www-greatdvb-com/2
If this is are far as you get......then get the error......its the wrong cable....or....the time of plugging the power in....or....the box is dead
have you tried both the eprom flash software's there are 2 of them......one works if the other doesn't

ask people that killed their receiver how they did it.

The first post of this thread has a link for the PVR800 editor, & a link for firmware. That's why I asked which file you were trying to open.
As mtv1 says, the firmware file isn't associated with any windows programs. It is for use with the editor.

Laptops & pc's haven't had RS232 ports fitted for years. There are RS232 (serial) to USB adapters available, but they are not guaranteed to work.
It's best if you could borrow an old pc which has a dedicated 9 pin RS232 serial port.

DONE!!! I tell you my experience, hope can be useful...
I had a Skybox F5 stuck on LOAD and a Memobox M3 (clone of Skybox) stuck on LOAD 100. Both after a TP_PROG update.
I tried for some hours, every firmware, every timing of turning on...nothing. It did say "Please reset target" but nothing appened.
Then I thought to change cable! And with a new cable I did the trick at first try!!! No matter the timing (it worked even if I turned on the Box after 1 sec)
as soon as I turned on, the software said DONE and started downloading the firmware. It worked with both F5 and M3 with their last firmware.
So if you can't connect to the box...just change cable and be sure the cable you buy is a NULL MODEM and not just a SERIAL one.
Hope it will hepl someone!
Thanks for the thread!

This really made my day! I had an S9 that was continually rebooting and after unsuccessfully trying various programs to communicate with it by the serial bus, I had long ago given up and removed it to the "useless pile of junk that I cannot bring myself to throw out" that is accumulating in my garage! After finding your article I decided to give it another try. I have a replacement S9 so made an image of it (.abs) and loaded your program into an old PC that still has a serial connector and connected the nul-modem cable. At first it would not communicate but eventually I decided to wait to start the communication (not pressing next). Instead I turned on the S9, waited a couple of seconds, but before the S9 began to boot. I then pressed "next" and the program immediately recognized the S9 and uploaded the file. It is now working grteat as an exact copy of the replacement S9. Thank you for a program that really worked!!!
Since I am new to the site I am enjoying browsing the many varied subjects. Great stuff!

eromclient.abs, flashburn.ini, sdram.ini,
LZMA.exe & eromUpgrade.exe & helpfile.txt.
1. Connect up your PC to the Openbox
using a null modem serial cable.
2. Switch the box OFF
3. Run EromUpgrade.exe then check the
com port setting is correct
4. Select the latest firmware .abs file. (Download her if you don't have any (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f184/latest-firmware-openbox-s9-s10-214492/))
5. Select "next" then switch ON the box
and follow the instructions to load
and flash burn the firmware.
6. If the process does not start, try
various time combinations of switching
the box ON after selecting "next"
7. Don't switch the power off or disconnect
while the download & flash is taking place.
If you cannot contact to your box check your null modem cable. Connections are like showen below
pin 2 ...to... pin 3
pin 3 ...to... pin 2
pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7
Important: Go into device manager (goto start-->run-->type "devmgmt.msc" )
or right click MyComputer--->manage--->on the left side u find device manager
and check that you are choosing the right com port. If possible use computer with serial R232 com port built on mainbord.
Have fun[/QUOTE]

has anyone had success with USB to RS232 cables to flash Skybox F5s? my PC doesn't have a RS232 slot - what's the difference with serial and null modem - from what I gather a null modem cable is required. Would like to know if anyone has had any success with any combo of cables, thanks

...what's the difference with serial and null modem - from what I gather a null modem cable is required...
A straight through serial cable is connected pin for pin (i.e. pin1 - 1, 2 - 2, 3 - 3 etc.).
A null modem cable has pin 2 - 3, pin 3 - 2 & pin 5 - 5.

A how to guide on how to fix a corrupt firmware image in the OpenBox S9/S10 and Skybox S)/S10 Even if it seems bricked.
This guide is taken from another forum so big thanks to auther.
Box does not respond or displays On?
If your box does not respond, or no displays light there is a good chance the current firmware on the box is somehow corrupt.
You will need to use this tool (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/attachments/f184/84354d1318776390-recover-dead-skybox-openbox-flash-using-serial-rs232-null-modem-cable-upgrade_pvr800_hd_tool.zip), connect a Serial RS232 Null Modem Cable to the box and follow the instructions.
Hopefully it will bring your box back to life.

The 15 pin connector on your laptop is a monitor connector, not an RS232 serial connector.
Do you, or any of your mates have an older pc/laptop with a dedicated serial (9 pin) connector?

3. Run EromUpgrade.exe then check the

What Port do I need? Currently it is set on COM 1
Bits Rate: 115200
Parity: Even
Operation mode: Upgrade
This all correct?

Openbox s12 stuck on red light, I have tried all loaders and no luck. The ALI loader says receiving chunk and then times out. With the other loaders it connect some times with 'stb memory error' but that is only if I remove the rs232 connnection and replug, It never connects when I switch box off/on. Could it be hardware issue?

I am new to this forum, I currently need help to recover my dead skybox F5.
Ok so here is the issue when i turn on the F5 box nothing happens it has a faint red light on the front panel when powered up and also the ethernet ports light up too, so i assume at this point the box needs a reflash with a RS232 Null modem cable.
I have tried doing a reflash with the RS232 null modem cable on my pc (windows xp) i have downloaded a few different upgrade tools from different sites. When I open the EromUpgrade icon i have the port set to COM1 as per my device manager on pc, bit rate is 115200, parity is even. Operate mode as upgrade.
So at this point when i click on browse i get 2 file options one is eromclient.abs and the other is eromclient_M3606.abs i have tried selecting either one then i click on the "include bootloader" box, when i click on NEXT i get a popup message that says "Wrong File!".
I have also tried browsing and selecting different images such as SKYBOX_F3_M3_3601HD_CMT.abs etc.. I have tried old and new versions ones again from different sites, after selecting one of these files i am able to press NEXT then it says synchronizing STBs.. please reset target! at this point i switch on the F5 box it waits then its says "Set stb memory error" click back and try again... I have tried all this above with even selecting the "data dump" option in the operate mode bit but still the same probelm.
Can someone please advise where i am going wrong?? What file do i actually select once i click on the browse button ?
sorry for the long message i thought i would get much info in there as possible... Any help or advice please? as i am pulling my hair out.. Thanks

My A3 box was stuck in a loop, it just kept counting round to L090 then restarting and doing the same again. This thread sorted it for me, pretty simple to follow, many thx darvash.

I am having rebooting issues with my Skybox F5 on load up (looping.) I have reflashed it succesfully, re-programmed channel lists and also re-installed CCcam, but all scrambled channels are still scrambled. I can watch all FTA channels no problem. What i have found is it will reload after 3 attempts without the satellite f-connecter plugged in but won't load with it connected. This is what is causing the scrambled channels to remain so. Any ideas other than a single strand of outer wier touching the inner as i have redone this several times and there is no wire touching. Every idea welcome? No CCcamshows on info screen when program change.

sounds like a faulty box or lnb fault
the picture won't unscramble if the cable's not plug'd in
Easy test....take the box to a mates setup if you have one with a similar setup...try the box
if it run's ok then has to be a break in the cable or a faulty LNB
Easy when you think about it

Hi all, I have read through this thread thoroughly (yep all 39 pages) to look for answer to resolving dead F5s. The problem im having is box is showing figure '8' with faint red light, have tried to go through all the different links to Erom upgrade for F3/F5/F5s which all have the same Erom Upgrade tool - STB EROM Upgrade 2.0.0c. After I go onto browse file put in a .abs file (I have tried many different ones) and press next it comes up with 'Synchronizing STBs.. Please reset target!' . At this point I have tried many methods of powering up box, putting plug in/putting power cable in and connecting at different times i.e. 2 secs, 4 secs, 7 secs but unfortunately it just wont connect. I have just reflashed a openbox S11 and have previously done a few before with no problems. So why cant I get this Skybox F5s to sync with Erom? Any advice giving greatly appreciated.

This can happen if it doesn't recognise the file you select in the browse window.
Are you selecting a .abs file for your model of box?

Hi folks, anyone help with this post above from earlier in the week??
I have experienced a couple of boxes like yours, where the box isn't even recognised at switch on & have come to the conclusion that there is more wrong with the box than just a simple reflash.
Like any kind of electronic equipment, failures do happen. The fact that you have flashed other boxes rules out any "finger trouble".

Ok I was having the same problem and just fixed it finally after a lot of trial and error heres what I did -
downloaded http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/attachments/f184/133769d1343185075-just-recovered-dead-skybox-f3-software-erom_upgrade_8mflash.rar
then downloaded some older firmware -
SKYBOX_3601hd_CMT_120820071a.abs
(if you search google you will find it)
Then I plugged the box in and attached the null modem cable,
opened up the erom upgrade folder and ran CONFIG.BAT
then ran EROMUPGRADE
Selected the firmware I downloded
Ticked Include Bootloader
Clicked next
when it says-
synchonizing stb
Reset target
I unplug and replug the power cable out of the back of the box quite fast it will then let you carry on and recover the box
once recovered you can update to a later firware via usb or the X3 Lan tool.
hope this works for you as I was pulling my Hair out yesterday

many loaders have no firmware bundled, you have to find that yourself.
It sounds like you are trying to load the .abs file that is part of the loader itself or you are trying to load firmware from another model receiver.

Do you know anyone with an older pc that has a 9 pin serial port? It's always best to use a pc with a built-in port first.
Other than that, you need a USB to serial adapter. These are not always guaranteed to work though. You can find them on Ebay or Amazon.
To go with it, you will need a null modem cable (female to female). Make sure it's a null modem cable & not a straight through serial cable. They look the same, but are wired differently.
The 15 pin port on your laptop is for an external monitor.

Hopefully it will bring your box back to life.
instructions
Download the file:- "Upgrade_PVR800_HD_Tool.rar (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/attachments/f184/84354d1318776390-recover-dead-skybox-openbox-flash-using-serial-rs232-null-modem-cable-upgrade_pvr800_hd_tool.zip)"
Unzip this file & you have a folder with 5 files:-
eromclient.abs, flashburn.ini, sdram.ini,
LZMA.exe & eromUpgrade.exe & helpfile.txt.
1. Connect up your PC to the Openbox
using a null modem serial cable.
2. Switch the box OFF
3. Run EromUpgrade.exe then check the
com port setting is correct
4. Select the latest firmware .abs file. (Download her if you don't have any (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f184/latest-firmware-openbox-s9-s10-214492/))
5. Select "next" then switch ON the box
and follow the instructions to load
and flash burn the firmware.
6. If the process does not start, try
various time combinations of switching
the box ON after selecting "next"
7. Don't switch the power off or disconnect
while the download & flash is taking place.
If you cannot contact to your box check your null modem cable. Connections are like showen below
pin 2 ...to... pin 3
pin 3 ...to... pin 2
pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7
Important: Go into device manager (goto start-->run-->type "devmgmt.msc" )
or right click MyComputer--->manage--->on the left side u find device manager
and check that you are choosing the right com port. If possible use computer with serial R232 com port built on mainbord.
Have fun

Phew; was getting beginning to get disheartened but finally got the F5S back!
Thanks!
Just FYI:
I updated AJs channel list (25-5-14) on my F5S and it got stuck showing 'LOAD' on boot.
Got this USB->R232 cable from amazon: Startech 1-Port USB to Null Modem RS232 DB9 Serial DCE Adapter Cable with FTDI (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008634VJY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (I have a win7 64bit laptop without a serial port).
Tried following the instructions from the 1st post but kept getting the 'stb memory error'.
Hunted down this version of the tool (erom_upgrade_8Mflash) from here:
http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f184/f5s-flashing-388148/#post2175617
and it worked 1st time. (Took about 4 mins and that was with the latest firmware from skybox.cc too).
Other than the COM Port # being correct I don't think its other settings matter; COM port settings on my laptop are still on their defaults:
Bps: 9600
Parity: None
Whereas I left the flash-tool's settings alone (as per the ReadMe.txt):
Bps: 115200
Parity: Even
etc.

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone could help me, i'm trying to repair 2 f3 boxes that packed 1 day after each other!! The first box packed after i did channel scan and now nothing it's like box dead nothing lights up or anything and the next day I updated the 2nd box with channel list and now all that does it say load on display
I've only got a laptop so no rs232 port so i bought rs232 to usb cable and all i get is the set stb memory error!! I've seen found 2 old pc's which have the rs232 port on but still waiting fir cable to arrive with rs232 on both ends, so i thought i'd try the usb cable and all i get on pc is please reset target! I've been trying for days to fix, just wondered why 2 different computers do different things when trying to upgrade!!
Hopefully can sort both boxes today when rs232 cable on both ends arrives, just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what to try in case the cable doesn't arrive today, I've read every post on this thread and other threads from other forums!!

Although I find your comments to be arrogant on this thread, I am happy to say thankyou!
Using what you said about the 3 pins I successfully got my USB to Serial to work.

Hi,
Having bought a brand new Openbox v5s, I installed the latest f5s software, and also TP_PROG which seemed to all be working fine.
I then put in my xxxxx, and was promted to reboot. I turned off the box, and ever since it has been stuck on LOAD.
I have read thousands of posts, on hundreds of sites and having no luck what so ever.
I am connecting my Openbox to my laptop using a USB to RS232 and a null modem.
These are the steps I am taking and what is happening. Any help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated:
I am connecting my laptop to my Openbox via a null modem and a usb to RS232.
Switching the box off (Which is still showing LOAD on the display) by unplugging the mains power lead, as this is the only way I am able to turn off.
Running the config.bat file (As directed if previously receiving the STB Memory error)
Then running the EromUpgrade.exe file.
Selecting the correct COM port, and uploading the latest .abs file, ticking the box for "include bootloader" and clicking next
Then, I'm re-entering the mains power lead to the Openbox (As indicated to switch the box back on) but the display is blank.
It is then saying "Synchronizing STBs" "Please reset target" This is the case until I am then again, unplugging the mains power lead in which at the side of this promt, it is stating "Done"
After 5 or so seconds, It says "Set STB memory error, click back to try again"
And this is as far as I have got. For days. Any help on this again, would be GRATEFULLY appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

You may wish to try different loaders. I've not managed to resurrect my dead box but others have had success with trying different loaders. If you go back a few pages then you may find links to these.

In the end, I went to my parents house which I have my very old Dell PC, which took me about a hour to find all leads etc to put back together...
Plugged my null modem into my Openbox, and into the rs232 port in the back of the PC..... Ran EromUpgrade, did the usual steps as stated above... And........... Done!!

Does this work with Skybox A3
A how to guide on how to fix a corrupt firmware image in OpenBox S9/S10/S11/S12 and Skybox S10 F3 F4 F5 F5S Even if it seems bricked.
Box does not respond or displays On or rebooting constantly ?
If your box does not respond, or no displays light there is a good chance the current firmware on the box is somehow corrupt.
You will need to use 264281, connect a Serial RS232 Null Modem Cable to the box and follow the instructions.
Hopefully it will bring your box back to life.
instructions
Download 264284 or 264289 if have older Openbox/Skybox
Unzip this file
1. Connect up your PC to the Openbox
using a null modem serial cable.
2. Switch the box OFF
3. Run EromUpgrade.exe (Located in folder you have downloaded and unzipped) then check the
com port setting is correct
4. Select the latest firmware .abs file. (Download her if you don't have any (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f184/new-image-firmware-skybox-openbox-424830/#post2316860))
5. Select "next" then switch ON the box
and follow the instructions to load
and flash burn the firmware.
6. If the process does not start, try
various time combinations of switching
the box ON after selecting "next"
(IF it comes with set STB memory error please run config.bat file (Located in folder you have downloaded and unzipped) ) before running loader
7. Don't switch the power off or disconnect
while the download & flash is taking place.
If you cannot contact to your box check your null modem cable. Connections are like showen below
pin 2 ...to... pin 3
pin 3 ...to... pin 2
pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7
Important: Go into device manager
<right click MyComputer--->manage--->on the left side u find device manager
and check that you are choosing the right com port. If possible use computer with serial R232 com port built on mainbord.
Have fun

Hi Guys, I bought this box through a mate so don't really know how they are set-up etc. I updated the channels earlier today and the box has gone dead :( before I go any further I just had a couple of questions:
1. I have an openbox V5s, does it matter which openbox f/w I use most people seem to say no but some people are suggesting it does. All these S10, S11 etc....
2. If I flash the box will it remember the config? If not how do I access it and back that up? I assume these boxes are set-up to look at some IP somewhere how do I get back that up?
darvash
16th August, 2014, 10:20 PM
1. You can use openbox V5S or skybox F5S firmware for your box
2. It will not remember the config and after flashing you have to put it again.

and follow the instructions to load
and flash burn the firmware.
6. If the process does not start, try
various time combinations of switching
the box ON after selecting "next"
(IF it comes with set STB memory error please run config.bat file (Located in folder you have downloaded and unzipped) ) before running loader
7. Don't switch the power off or disconnect
while the download & flash is taking place.
If your box keeps rebooting after updating so try software from www.hddvbsw.com (http://hddvbsw.com/index.php?c=key_download)
If you cannot contact to your box check your null modem cable. Connections are like showen below
pin 2 ...to... pin 3

pin 4 ...to... pin 6
pin 5 ...to... pin 5
pin 6 ...to... pin 4
pin 7 ...to... pin 8
pin 8 ...to... pin 7
Important: Go into device manager
<right click MyComputer--->manage--->on the left side u find device manager
and check that you are choosing the right com port. If possible use computer with serial R232 com port built on mainbord.

When you click on the "browse" button, you need to select the right firmware file for your box. A common mistake is to browse to the "eromclient.abs" file, or to browse to a compressed (zip or RAR) version of yur firmware.

Have you unzipped the file? The link to firmware in the first post is to a post containing zipped files. When unzipped it should be a 4MB file (4,096kB).
It shouldn't matter if the box is not connected yet. Even without your null modem cable connected, it shouldn't give you a "wrong file" message.

he's probably trying to load the eromclient.abs that comes with the loader, instead of the real file.

Hello everyone
I have a Skybox S12 and that has stopped working just before Christmas. Speaking to the seller he suggests I should buy a new one, newer model. But even so I would like to try and fix this one.
The problem is there is no sound or picture.
Every thing else seems to be working. I can change channel, rotate the dish, change to radio, etc... Dish rotation is correct as I can verify with a second receiver.
I have managed to get it to work by touching parts on the circuit board once, but as soon as I turn it off and would not show picture nor sound on restart.
Had it powered off for a few days as well. That didn't help either.
One indication it may work again the TV responds when I connect the box HDMI cable. With "No signal" from "No cable".
I guess the ?50 question is is it hardware or software problem and how to verify.
PS. Considering buying RS232 cable

Hi everyone,
I have a skybox f3, sub ran out about 4 mths ago so it got turned off and put in a cupboard. last week I got it out and plugged it in hoping to set it back up again but it is dead... no power...no light on the front, nothing. ive gone through the steps on the first page and read through the thread, trying different loaders and .abs files, even ones for clones but everytime, all i get is set stb memory error. I have the rs-232 port on my desktop and a null modem cable and connecting them like this and i have used this cable with other boxes and it has worked fine before. I just want to no if anyone has got anywhere with this problem yet or has a solution or even a different angle on the matter... anything!!! Thanks in advance

Open the box and look at the Caps (Small Cylinders) they should all be flat on the top. If one is rounded its blown like a fuse. Common on these boxes. Other things can cause a dead box like the front pcb panel.

Thanks DW190, i looked inside the box and on the psu board there is one that looks a lot more rounded on the top compared to the others which are all flat on top. Hopefully then my new psu should fix this...fingers crossed!

Looks like a that domed capacitor is your problem. It's a pity you didn't look at it before buying another board. You could have repaired it for less than ?1.
If you don't know anyone that can repair it, you could get a few ? back by selling it on Ebay. Someone will buy it & repair it.

somebody once said there were bogus capacitors out in the market years ago that weren't up to spec.
The voltage rating wasn't what was printed on the cap, such as a 15v cap was only really rated for 12v so they failed after x amount of time.

Just in case anyone was interested, the capacitor that blew was 1000uf 10v and cost only 89p and took half hour desoldering old one and soldering new one on.

Hi all,I've managed to brick my V6s and am quite happy to reflash it using the RS232 method but the V6S has a 3.5mm jack plug socket for it's RS232 connection.

I can't find a lead for the box for sale in the UK and don't fancy waiting for one to arrive from China so am quite happy to solder one up myself but despite hours of Googling I can't find the pinout details anywhere, would someone have the wiring diagram for the RS232 - 3.5mm jack lead please?

Not having much luck with my v5s here. Firmware downloads fine but when it gets to the burning stage it sits for a few secs and then reports a ‘burning flash is failed’ error. Tried different programs/PCs/firmware etc but no joy. Must be the box as it downloads fine and I guess the burning stage is under the box control??

I made up a lead for my V6 today. I've attached the diagram. The lead I made was from the 3.5mm socket on the V6 to a 9 pin female serial (D-type) socket, that plugs straight into my pc's serial port.
I bought the cheapest serial lead I could find on Ebay & cut the socket off one of the ends. I buzzed out the wires that went to pins 2, 3, & 5. I knew that the lead from pin 5 went to the sleeve connection on the jack plug. I didn't know which way round the wires from pin 2 & 3 should go, but got it right first time.

Hi P&D,
Thanks for all your help on trying to bring the boxes back to "life."
I've got an old F3 that is constantly rebooting after a recent favourites update by USB. This isn't the first time I've seen this happen either. It eventually just stays on L100. Anyway I have used the null modem cable and have managed to complete the process of reloading the software several times, but the same fault persists. Just wanted your opinion......time to give it up as a bad job? BTW I have just about every loader and all versions of the software, but none seem to cure the problem.
