Hi folks......having a problem starting the laptop. As stated its an Emachines E442 running windows 7.

When i switch it on, i get the usual "enter f2 for set up" then it moves on to the "windows starting" section (just before it asks for the password) then the screen flashes for a split second, can only catch the first two words of what it says at the top....it starts with "A problem........" goes off before i can read anything else.

Tried the f8 option on start up to get to safe mode, debugging mode etc, but it wont get any further than that.....

Havent got a recovery disc (should have made one , i know i know) but its less than 12 months old and hardly used.

Not added any new software or hardware recently and was working fine until now, fully charged and fast too.....

Any ideas good people, very frustrating when not working properly arent they ??? lol

Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas

Most laptops have a recovery included in a hidden partition.
On most you press and hold F10 buring boot up and this eventually displays options for repair,recovery,re-install etc etc.
If F10 does nothing simply try the other F keys,it may be different on yours.
Hope you have some luck.

Thanks for the reply mate, tried all that but still no luck.

Have since found the problem is on windows at start up and I believe the following is the culprit......

<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

It says online i need to reboot from my windows disc to repair or replace this problem but i havent got the disc (silly me i know)

Warranty only covers hardware issues and this i believe is software problem.....wouldnt mind but its only 8 months old and i gotta pay for software repair....robbing barstewards, not much of a guarantee is it ????

Cheers mate

Can you not get in Safe mode?

Press f8 at boot and select safe mode.
