Not wanting to insult but you are using Telnet correctly?
On a windows 10 PC
1. Right click on the windows menu icon in the bottom left corner and select 'programs and features'
2. Then click on 'turn windows features on or off'
3. Find 'Telnet client' tick and press OK and exit
4. Open a Command Prompt(admin)
5. Type Telnet and the IP address of your box ie telnet 192.168.1.231
6. It should return 'your box login' ie my says 'Zgemmahs2 Login' type root and press return
7. If it need a password it will ask for it next if it doesn't need a password it will return 'root@your box' ie my says 'root@zgemmah2s:~#'
8. Type your telnet commands for the box to comply with.

I only use Filezilla........which ask's for the IP address .....username / pass/ port

guess the other software are the same........

Do you have a firewall running........only thing I can think of (blocking you from connecting to them via the software)
