(Updated 15/06 2010) OVER 167,000 VIEWS NOW !!!!

(From Ade),"I don’t generally do a new post when I’ve done a modification to some of the guides or updated uLoader, but I feel the latest additions are probably worthy posting about.

System Menu 4.2 Wii’s softmodding process has been updated to include an application called multi mod manager. This one app now does the whole job for you, apart from a few button presses the whole thing is pretty much automated. It’s now more difficult to get it wrong than it is to get it right!!

I’ve also included cios249 version 19 into the packs for all Wii softmods as well as a mod of Wadmanager, called yet another wad manager mod which enables you to batch install a number of wad files. Especially useful for those doing safe upgrades of the system menu.

uLoader has also been updated to version 4.9c. Another reason for doing a new post about this is because a bug in how 4.9A handled the uloader config file was causing a number of hard drives that worked before to fail. This most notably affected the buffalo drives. This problem should now be fixed and those users may now want to upgrade to 4.9".

Grab the files you need from here,

Install THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL FIRST................Then....
Any black screens or DSI stack errors that may occur during any of the steps below are 99% harmless. Simply power off your Wii and turn it back on, then continue from the step you were on.

1. Copy the contents of the pack you downloaded above onto the root of your SD card keeping the folder structure. Overwrite any existing files.

2. Power on your Wii and go into the Homebrew Channel.

3. Load Multi Mod Manager.

4. Press down then press A to select ‘Install and patch IOS36.’

5. Press A to select Express mode.

6. Loads of text will splash across the screen, when the process has finished press any button on the wiimote.

**If you were only able to install Bootmii to IOS, you may want to install Priiloader now and make a NAND backup of your Wii and familarise yourself with how to access Priiloader before the system menu should you ever need to recover your Wii. Press Home to exit GP DOP-IOS if you choose to do this in order to return to the homebrew channel. When finished installing Priiloader you can continue from step A5.***

7. Press down so Remove stubbed IOS is selected then press A. When asked to check for stub IOSs press A. A number of stub IOSs will be discovered. Press B for ‘NO’ for all IOS files except 222, 223, 249 and 250. Which you should press A to confirm deletion of. Press B for all other IOSs. When the discovery of stub IOS is complete you will be sent to the MMM menu. If you were not asked to remove 222,223,249 or 250 move to step 7.1. Otherwise to continue to step 8.

If you accidentally delete any other stub IOS, it is not the end of the world. However when inserting an original game disc it may ask you to update your system. Should this happen to you visit the ‘safe upgrade to 4.2 page‘, and follow the instructions in that guide to recover your IOS files to the latest versions.

7.1 Run Any Title Deleter MOD from the Homebrew Channel. Choose IOS36 and press A. Go to System Titles and press A. Select the following IOS files one by one and select A to delete them one after the other: IOS222 IOS223 IOS249 IOS250 If any of the above are not listed, check ‘other system files.’ If they are still not to be found, do not worry, just ignore and move onto the next step below, the guide may still work. Press home to exit when finished.

8. Still in MMM, press up to select Run WAD Manager, then press A.

9. Press 1 to select all the wad files in the folder, then press A to continue.

If you get any install errors with the above wads, try step 7.1 above and then try again.

10. When finished press home on your wiimote twice to exit back to the homebrew channel.

You are now set for playing backups on your Wii.

Post from AdeWii 08/05/2010
As one of the few places of where I actually post (all be it rarely) I just wanted to let you know this morning I made the tough decision to leave the front line of Wii softmodding support. I would like to thank everyone that made the tools possible, and anyone that found my tutorials useful.

Of course there is still plenty of useful resources out there on the web including this forum. I will occasionally still monitor these forums at even more rarely GBATemp.

I do have a backup of the blog pages, so if there is any particular guide that you feel has been wiped from the face of the web for good, then PM me and I can post you the content, I will not start topics of them myself as the main reason for pulling the blog is simply I don't have the time to keep it at the forefront of what's going on anymore and answering people's questions was also taking up too much time. So feel free to re-post and modify anything you see fit (although some form of credit would obviously still be appreciated for the underlying work)

All download packs are still available so any guides such as this one which have been re-posted, the links for the downloads are still live.

There is no point posting something like this without explaining myself, so I may as well.

As I said, time is the main reason. Contrary to popular belief I am not some spotty kid in his bedroom. I am 30 years old, have a house to upkeep and a job which more than ever is now sending me all over the UK at the drop of a hat. My girlfriend has also recently become ill, its nothing serious but has made me realise she deserves a bit more of my time, especially due to my job situation. So something had to go.

Like I say here and GBAtemp will be the only places I will keep an eye on. I will try and get involved as much as possible with the community, both here on the Wii pages and also the Xbox360 pages.

Keep up the good work everyone and thanks for the traffic to my site and the support over the past 12 months or so.

Older Tutorial.

Wii consoles purchased towards the later half of 2009, including all black Wii consoles have a newer DVD drive (D3-2) inside them. These Wii consoles will not play games from blank DVD discs, they will however work with a USB loader. To find out if your Wii is likely to have a D3-2 drive go to this site (http://www.wiidrives.com/list).

It's been a while since I did anything with the Wii, anyways I was asked to softmod a 4.2E, tried a few tutorials but couldn't find anything quick and easy to get it done. ( I know there's a few tutorials posted but i couldn't get anything to work with the 4.2E firmware). After a few hours of searching/googling I came across this well written tutorial, and if you install cIOS 14 or 15 ( see attachments below) using Uloader 3.3 you will get the newest Mario game etc working, once cIOS 14 or 15 is installed, start up Uloader then select load/play and it's as easy as that, (see below for instructions on how to install cIOS 14 or 15) .I take no credit for any of these tutorials, I'm only pointing people in the right direction as I thought It was a pain in the (*)(*) to find out how to softmod a 4.2E Wii.This tutorial does not work for version 4.0,4.1 or lower Firmware peeps, only use with 4.2E, and it's not my fault if you brick your Wii, unlikely but, always always read everything twice !!!! Anyways.............

Here goes, this should take you no more than 30 mins tops, I have only done this on a 4.2E version as mentioned above it only works on 4.2E.....

Download bannerbomb v2 from here,
bannerbomb (http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/index.new.php)
follow the instructions, as soon as you have the homebrew channel on your Wii your good to go......
Next.....
Visit this website, Ade's blog....
HOWTO: Setup a System Menu 4.2 Wii for playing backups of commercial games with uLoader Ade's Softmodding Wii blog (http://adewii.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/howto-prepare-a-system-menu-4-2-wii-for-launching-backups-from-blank-dvd-or-usb-drive/)

Follow the tutorial.
Any black screens or DSI stack errors that may occur during any of the steps below are 99% harmless. Simply power off your Wii and turn it back on, then continue from the step you were on.

Method A

A1. Copy the contents of the pack you downloaded above onto the root of your SD card keeping the folder structure. Overwrite any existing files.

A2. Power on your Wii and go into the Homebrew Channel.

A3. Load GP DOP-IOS MOD. Press A to continue

A4. Press down to select ‘Install an IOS that accepts fakesigning.’ When asked choose to load IOS from SD. Follow any further prompts and press A when it finishes to return to GP DOP-IOS MOD menu.

A5. In GP DOP IOS. Press left on the D pad until IOS 36 is selected. Press A. Press A again. When asked to check for stub IOSs press A. A number of stub IOSs will be discovered. Press B for ‘NO’ for all IOS files except 222, 223, 249 and 250. Which you should press A to confirm deletion of. Press B for all other IOSs. When the discovery of stub IOS is complete you will be sent to the DOP-IOS menu. Press home to exit back to the homebrew channel. If you were not asked to remove 222,223,249 or 250 move to step A5.1. Otherwise to continue to step 6.

A5.1 Run Any Title Deleter MOD from the Homebrew Channel.

A6. In the Homebrew Channel Run WAD Manager.

When it opens choose IOS36, Press A to open from SD slot. Install the following WAD files as listed below to your Wii:

cIOS202[38+60]-v4.wad
cIOS222[38]-v4.wad
cIOS223[38+37]-v4.wad
cIOS249-v14.wad
cIOS250-v14.wad
IOS70-64-v6687[TB+ES_diV+NAND].wad
uloader-UMRD wad

If you get any install errors with the above wads, try step 5.1 above and then try again. If still no luck start over with method B below.

You are now set for playing backups on your Wii. For details of using uLoader scroll down to past Method B.

If you often access the SD menu on your Wii console, delete the boot.elf from the root of your SD card to prevent bannerbomb from launching everytime you enter the SD card menu.

Method B

B1. Load Trucha Bug Restorer. Press B to choose No IOS Reload. Wait a few seconds and then press 1 to continue. Choose Downgrade IOS15. When prompted, choose load IOS from SD and press A to continue, follow the prompts and exit when finished.

B2. Load Trucha Bug restorer again and this time press left on the Wii remote until you select IOS15 and Press A. Wait a few seconds and press 1. Choose IOS36 menu. Copy the settings so they are exactly as listed below:

Install IOS to slot (36)
Hash check (trucha) YES
ES_Identity YES
Nand Permissions YES

Scroll back up and select install patched IOS36. When asked choose to load IOS from SD. Follow any further prompts and exit when finished.

B3. Load Trucha Bug Restorer yet again, now choose IOS36 and press A. Wait a few seconds and press 1. Choose to restore IOS15. Press A to restore. When Prompted always choose ‘Load IOS from SD’ follow any further prompts and exit when finished.

If at this point you get a DSI stack error, try powering down your Wii completly and then turning it back on and carrying on from step 3. If the DSI error continues, in the Homebrew channel press the home button and choose to go into the Bootmii menu. From inside Bootmii choose to load the homebrew channel again, and then run Trucha Bug Restorer. You should now be able to follow the step B3 instructions fully.

**If you were only able to install Bootmii to IOS, you may want to install Priiloader now and make a NAND backup of your Wii and familarise yourself with how to access Priiloader before the system menu should you ever need to recover your Wii. When finished installing Priiloader you can continue from step B4.***

B4. Run Any Title Deleter MOD from the Homebrew Channel. Choose IOS36 and press A. Go to System Titles and press A. Select the following IOS files one by one and select A to delete them one after the other:

IOS222
IOS223
IOS249
IOS250

If any of the above are not listed, check other system files. If they are still not to be found, do not worry, just ignore and move onto the next one or the next step below, the guide may still work. Press home to exit when finished.

B5. In the Homebrew Channel Run WAD Manager. When it opens choose IOS36, Press A to open from SD slot. Install the following WAD files as listed below to your Wii:

cIOS202[38+60]-v4.wad
cIOS222[38]-v4.wad
cIOS223[38+37]-v4.wad
cIOS249-v14.wad
cIOS250-v14.wad
IOS70-64-v6687[TB+ES_diV+NAND].wad
uloader-UMRD wad.

You are now set for playing backups on your Wii.

Ade has updated the files so ULoader 3.3 and cIOS 14 is included now,you can download cIOS 15 below if you prefer to use that, Ade explains the differences between cIOS 14 & 15 see below.

I have tested a few 4.2E with cIOS 14 and 15, both work great, the new ULoader is even simpler to use as well. These files will enable you to play the very latest games, New Mario game etc, the only game I'm led to believe that does not run from disc is the new Ghostbusters game, if anyone can clarify this please let me know asap ?....

This guide does not work on older firmware !!!, and it will only work with the new black 4.2E Wii's using a Hard Drive, using DVDR's will just give you an error.....

How to Install cIOS rev 15, attached below....

1.download cIOS38_rev15-Installer.dol ( see attachment )

2.make a folder on your SD card in apps called, CIOS15, copy the cIOS38_rev15-Installer.dol into it, rename it to boot.dol, now the folder on your SD card should look like this Apps--CIOS15--boot.dol

3.Fire up the homebrew channel, locate the CIOS15 folder, install it via NETWORK not by wad or you get an error, you have to be connected to the net to download it, so make sure your online when doing this !!!

4.Once installed make sure you still have the uloader on your SD card, click on ULoader in the Wii channel, press 2 to launch from DVD,if you have downloaded an NTSC/JAP title go into config options and select NTSC or JAP b4 running/loading the game,If I have missed anything send me a PM, cheers.

And lastly a big thanks to Ade for the blog and the files,he is now a member on Digital Kaos, cheers m8 !!!

BACK UP YOUR NAND (OPTIONAL),(stole this from somewhere on the net....)

Making a NAND backup with Bootmii is highly recommended, it will recover your Wii from 99.9% of bricks.
Use the same SD card you used to install Bootmii and make sure there is at least 530mb free on it.
Bootmii is very fussy about what SD cards it uses, so avoid generic ones and try and use a Sandisk or similar.

a) Put the SD card into the Wii, if you installed Bootmii as boot2 then it will load, if it is installed as an IOS go to the Homebrew Channel, press 'home' on your wiimote and select 'Launch Bootmii'.

b) Use the power/reset/eject buttons to navigate the Bootmii menu and select the icon with the gears on it. If those buttons don't work then you will have to use a Gamecube controller.

c) Now select the icon with a green arrow pointing from the chip to the SD card and follow the on screen instructions.

D) In about 10 mins you will have a NAND backup, it is normal to have up to 80 bad blocks so don't worry if you get some.

e) Put the SD card into PC and copy the NAND backup somewhere safe, you can now delete it from your card. If you installed Bootmii as boot2 then also copy the Bootmii folder to your PC and either delete or rename it, otherwise it will load every time you switch your Wii on.

If ever you get bricked then copy the bootmii folder and NAND backup onto your card, do steps a) & b) again, using Preloader to get to HBC if necessary, then select the icon with the arrow going from the SD card to the chip. It is not recommended to restore your NAND if you have Bootmii installed as an IOS.[/COLOR]
Now on board we have Adewii who wrote this tutorial, here he explains all about cIOS 14 & 15.

Just to clear up the cIOS rev thing.

cIOS rev 15 is quite buggy. It's obvious Waninkoko did a rush job of it since the Wii is no longer his priority. However no one should ever complain because without him we would never have got this far with Softmodding the Wii.

Anyway the only additional feature Rev15 really brings is support for dual layer discs from backup launchers. The only backup launchers that will boot Mario Bros Wii with Rev15 is uLoader and USB Loader GX.

It also breaks the Gamecube backup launcher so if you use that it will no longer work.

Also due to the bugs in it, the author of Neogammar is not officially supporting it either, so if your going to be using neogammer I would recommend you stay on Rev14.

As for the new Mario Bros, most of the fixes for this are actually supplied by the loaders themselves, not the cIOS. The latest version of Neogammer will play the 'patched' version of the game fine from rev14.

uLoader latest version included a method of how to do it so can be run from IOS222. currently it's done manually but an automated way should come soon. (This is the main reason for my guides always recmmending ULoader, because the author of the app is also the author of the cIOS222 most of the features for that cIOS will be supported by uLoader first)

It does involve having the original game or burning a copy of the ISO to DVD and then having to burn another.

I uLoader 3.2 or above:

1) Enter into "DVD" option and press "Show BCA Datas".

2) Copy that hexadecimal string (uloader 3.3 will copy the data to a text file to the root of your SD):

An example would be:

0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000
0000000000000000 0000000000000000 00000001ab89e754 3047b3f157d44132

3) Take that ISO to the PC and hexedit with a hexeditor, you have to copy that bytes (not insert) from offset 0x100. As shown here:

http://www.eurasia.nu/images/submitt...boots_fine.png

4) Burn to DVD, or copy new ISO to HDD.

An automatic patch will be released soon, but for now, that's the procedure.

Below is the string you would insert for New Mario Bros Wii (yes, they just but in a whole single byte, great protection!!!)

0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000
0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000100000000 0000000000000000

Otherwise just search the torrent sites for the patched version and play with neogammer or get a 1GB USB pen drive or something and use the USB method of loading, which is obviously easier than trying to do it yourself and i would recommend USB loading over discs any day of the week. Games are much more compatible and load at the correct speeds. (DVD-R can only be read at 3x via softmodding, where as the original games run at 6x which explains why cut scene and games such as Guitar Hero suffer such drastic drag when used on a DVD backup launcher, you get none of these problems on USB.)

If Rev15 is doing the job for you then obviously keep it, the methods outlined above just tell you how to get it working with Rev14 with neogammer or uLoader. Also if your going to recommend uLoader as the main loader for games then I would recommend the games are run off IOS222 and not 249 as it's much more compatible. If your following my guide to softmod then you should be installing the IOS222 etc wad files anyway so shouldn't have a need to load the game from IOS249?

P.S> Thanks to the author of this thread as I get plenty of hits to my blog from here.

I have just tested new super mario bros wii with uloader 3.3 from DVD-R and the game works fine now on cIOS222 rev4.

No need to do any upgrading to cIOS249 rev15 anymore.

Also this was with a pre-patched version of the game. So not sure of the original ISO image that hasn't been patched. (I haven't got time to download another 4GB before our work crimbo party tonight)

I'm not sure on the forum rules here so I won't post a link to a torrent of the patched version of the game, but a simple google search will see you find it.

As the OP links to my guide for 4.2 modification anyway, it now includes uLoader 3.3 in the pack, so for any newbies there is no need to go out looking for it.

For anyone else on a lower version you can visit my blog from the OP and then find the page for upgrading uLoader to 3.3.

I'll try and keep an eye on this forum post as it does generate close to 200 daily hits to my blog, but for any direct questions please ask them on my blog as I am much more likely to respond quicker there.

I installed it as an ISO and as Boot2, did a nand backup also to the SD card, then backed it up to my PC just to be on the safe side, this all adds to the time though, crack on to the next bit if you want to skip bootmii/nand backup, BUT if your in no hurry guys do the nand backup, you can use the on/off button and the reset button on the Wii to skip through the menu's in bootmii if you do not have a gamecube controller.

What discs are you using m8, + or - ?
I usually use Verbatim, I use a Plextor writer, burn no problem at 16X also.
if your using + try -DVDR's.
What speed did you burn the disc at?

The new mario game works if the main.dol is patched, look for ind-nsmb-pal_maindol_patched.iso, I use newsgroups, might be the same name in a torrent, as long as it's been patched it will work with this method I've posted above, same will probably go for new releases the main.dol will have to be patched first.
This is running fine on my Wii, burnt at 16X.

Yes and Yes m8.
I have a wiikey v2 installed and it's softmodded.
The stick will have to be an 8GB 16GB 32GB though as most ISO's are 4.3GB,

Do not install softmods on your Nintendo Wii. there are many problems relating to updating the console. Delete all hombrew and softmod files before updating your console.
Softmod can kill your console.
Unless the main board firmware was backed up, there is no way to recover the console. A console 'bricked' in this way must be returned to Nintendo to be repaired by them. If they discover the problem is down to the use of 'homebrew' software, they will not warranty the unit and would charge to repair the damage.

The best solution is to install a modchip on your console:

Followed this guide and got my first game working last night. That was We Sing (PAL) which I had burned to DVD and it worked no problems for a good few hours of playing.

Today decided to try running games from USB, so dug out an oldish 60gb HDD and Integral external USB casing. Got the HDD working with the Wii fine and formatted it, used WBFS to add some game iso's and all looked to be working perfectly.

Problem is when I load any game from USB in uLoader or NeoGamma they play for a short while and then freeze. So far I have tried Boom Blox Smash Party, F1 2009 and We Sing (which worked fine from DVD) and all do exactly the same thing.

Anyone got any ideas of what the issues might be, and more importantly how I might go about correcting it?

EDIT: Just realised the missus was playing We Sing from DVD still, have just tried from USB and doens't seem to be freezing like the other games. Don't know if this makes any difference but thought I should mention it.

Re-EDIT: Forget that last edit, We Sing on USB has just crashed too, so definitely not and issue with the ISO as working fine on DVD but not USB.

The best solution is to install a modchip on your console:

where's your evidence!???

I softmodded my wii (version 4.2E) using the guide from wiihacks, when loading a backup the disc just said wii update, I seleted this and got a message saying system files corrupt. The wii still boots ok and I can play most backups (it's also hardmodded), but whenever I try to load a game from the usb hdd I get a stack dump.

After installing the homebrew channel for the first time I installed bootmi as boot2 and took a NAND backup.

Would it be wise to restore the NAND backup and start again ?

Cheers

It's been a while since I did anything with the Wii, anyways I was asked to softmod a 4.2E, tried a few tutorials but couldn't find anything quick and easy to get it done. ( I know there's a few tutorials posted but i couldn't get anything to work with the 4.2E firmware). After a few hours of searching/googling I came across this well written tutorial, only thing I changed was the Neogamma Loader to play back ups with the 002 error, everything works great now.I take no credit for any of these tutorials, I'm only pointing people in the right direction as I thought It was a pain in the (*)(*) to find out how to softmod a 4.2E Wii.Anyways.............

Here goes, this should take you no more than 30mins tops, I have only done this on a 4.2E version.....

Download bannerbomb v2 from here,
bannerbomb (http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/index.new.php)
follow the instructions, as soon as you have the homebrew channel on your Wii your good to go......

Next.....
Visit this website,
HOWTO: Setup a System Menu 4.2 Wii for playing backups of commercial games with uLoader Ade's Softmodding Wii blog (http://adewii.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/howto-prepare-a-system-menu-4-2-wii-for-launching-backups-from-blank-dvd-or-usb-drive/)

Download the file complete4_2.zip, and follow the tutorial.
As I said earlier I used the Neogamma loader to get games with the 002 fix error to work, all other games play no problem via the USB loader.
There's probably a newer bit of software out there, I'll amend my post later if there's a better solution, but for now this will get you up and running without the need to look around for hours and hours.
This may work on earlier firmwares also.
Uploaded the neogamma loader, just put this on your SD card in an Apps folder.

My friend i would just like to thanks you for all you have done it worked perfectly if you live anywhere near manchester ill buy you a beer am that greatfull thanks very much XD

Ok had another play about with the Wii tonight, to keep things neat and tidy and have just the one loader on the main menu I'd stick with the USB Loader, using the cIOS rev 15. Played back all the games I tried " cough cough" all originals, all I did was select ios 249,pal 50 or 60, English language, doh!
I have a NTSC of Wii fit+, tried the above settings just got the black screen, same settings but NTSC this time and it played no problem.
Played new Mario game, all games that require 002 fix, and NTSC titles.
Enjoy peeps.

Now...................
open up homebrew channel, locate the cIOS15 folder, select it.

Thanks again for the guide, as a beginner to the softmad world (had a d2ckey fitted for ages) Ive a few questions about all this.

How do I install neogamma? Is it a case of installing the dol through the homebrew channel and then installing the update through wad manager?

I have a 300G usb hard drive that I want to fill with ISO's, do my kids have to choose which ios, pal version etc of each particular game they want to play everytime? Is there a way it remembering your choice through uloader or neogamma?

The only bit of the guide I got stuck on was finding the "Bootmii configuration editor" so that I can put a delay in for when it boots into the normal wii startup screen.

Any help appreciated.

Forget about the neogamma loader m8, just install the ULoader, you must have an SD card in to run this, your going to be using a hard drive anyway so no need for the neogamma loader Uloader does it all.
I believe you just select the game via the menu, I dont use a hard drive, old skool everything to disc, lol, but it's a simply menu m8, easy for kids to use I'm sure.

Bootmii, select homebrew channel, then select the home button on the wii remote, brings up all options, that what your on about m8?

Tried the home button and I dont think its the bit I need, in the guide it says
"21. In the homebrew channel run the Bootmii configuration editor application."
Not sure why but I dont have that option there, just be a bit easier for the kids not having to mess around with power and reset buttons.

Getting the hang of things now, gotta say think its going to be easier than having a load of games around getting lost or scratched. Just in the process of copying them from dvd to the hdd using uloader, the ability to get the covers on screen is good too. If you have a spare hdd knocking around mate I definitely recommend giving it a go.

Yup the info i just gave you is for this, all it is it brings up different options for you to back up your nand, you have to use the power and reset buttons to select the different options, either that or plug in a game cube controller and use that to navigate.

the dol you?re talking about, it?s not the boot.dol that i installed before? or is it Neogamma thru wad manager? the 002 fix? duh...

that?s why it says noob next to my name.

It's been a while since I did anything with the Wii, anyways I was asked to softmod a 4.2E, tried a few tutorials but couldn't find anything quick and easy to get it done. ( I know there's a few tutorials posted but i couldn't get anything to work with the 4.2E firmware). After a few hours of searching/googling I came across this well written tutorial, only thing I changed was the Neogamma Loader to play back ups with the 002 error, and if you install cIOS 15 ( see attachments below) using Uloader you will get the newest Mario game etc working, once cIOS 15 is installed, start up Uloader, select IOS 249,then load/play, (see below for instructions on how to install this) .I take no credit for any of these tutorials, I'm only pointing people in the right direction as I thought It was a pain in the (*)(*) to find out how to softmod a 4.2E Wii.This tutorial does not work for version 4 Firmware peeps, only use with 4.2E, and it aint my fault if you brick your Wii, unlikely but, always always read everything twice !!!! Anyways.............

This guide does not work on older firmware !!!, and it will only work with the new black 4.2E Wii's using a Hard Drive, using DVD'rs will just give you an error I'm led to believe, if you know otherwise let me know and I'll amend this.

For people wanting to play new games like Mario follow this guide I made up last night, spent 3 hours trying different things, I dont even play the Wii,lol, anyway here goes......

4.Once installed make sure you still have the uloader on your SD card, click on ULoader in the Wii channel, press 2 to launch from DVD,select ios 249,Pal 50 or 60 works, then load the game, should be working no problem.
If I have missed anything send me a PM, cheers.

Ok had another play about with the Wii tonight, to keep things neat and tidy and have just the one loader on the main menu I'd stick with the USB Loader, using the cIOS rev 15. Played back all the games I tried " cough cough" all originals, all I did was select ios 249, Pal 50 or 60, English language, doh!
I have a NTSC of Wii fit+, tried the above settings just got the black screen, same settings but NTSC this time and it played no problem.
Played new Mario game, all games that require 002 fix, and NTSC titles, so to save using a couple of loaders USB loader does it all, I used the DVD option (2 on the remote when you load up ULoader), I don't have a spare hard drive at present to try, but it works 100% for all games burnt to disc using DVDR's.
Enjoy peeps.

It is not recommended to restore your NAND if you have Bootmii installed as an IOS.

thanks for the guide, great help

Hi dell xps, I have a white wii with 4.2 and modchip for the last 2 years and as a lot of others want to soft mod it. Am a bit confused though, I want to soft mod it to play form dvd's if I follow this tut will I be able to do this, also at what point should I back up the nand.

many thanks in advance.

Ranger

May I also say nice to see a forum that answers very newbie questions. Other forums I have tried to get answers on expect you to know everything straight away and have no patience at all.

Hi Ranger, ok when you install bannerbomb step 1, you get the press 1 for homebrew channel etc, sais if you have paid for this etc you have been robbed or something like that, after installing the 3 dvdx, bootmii, homebrew channel go back to the main Wii menu, click on the homebrew channel, on the Wii remote press home, brings up few options, go into bootmii, this then brings up 4 boxes, use the on/off and reset on the Wii box to navigate left/right and select the option for backing up your nand, make sure you have at least 600mb space I think it is on your sd card, it takes about 10 to 15 mins to do, it backs it up then verifies it.
You can also use a gamecube controller if you have one to navigate the menu in bootmii, but most people dont have a gamecube controller so use the on/off select buttons on your Wii.
And yes you will be able to play all your DVD backup's, instead of using the Wii channel top left, you will click on the Uloader screen now, and load your game, this option also allows you to use a hard drive with iso's on it instead of burning all your games to disc, you can copy the games you have to hard drive and load them that way as well now.
Hope that makes sense, just up from night shift and not with it at all,lol

Up and running in less than 30 mins (once i had everything on my SD). Felt like the Krypton Factor initially, but looking back it was a breeze. 100% spot on!

One question, if I may... Any way to have the ULoader default to the IOS 249, PAL/NTSC, rather than having to configure all the time?

Ok here goes might of been a fluke, I installed Uloader first (forwarder-UMRD.wad), then I installed cIOS 15, defaults to IOS 249 every time m8.
Give it a go,might work might not, dont have another Wii to try it with.

Added thanks for the guide too, lots of Kudos already here for this man, I'm thinking of trying it later as I'd like to boot of a USB HD for my games as i'm fed up of putting in the damn cd! I think i've got 4.2E, i'm not sure as i've got the Wii Drive Key V2 installed.

For people using DVDRs, I can say i've used Ritek Xtreme Red DVD_R, Verbatim DVD-R and currently using TDK DVD-Rs without any issues!

Quick question, anyone think it's worth Softmodding if you already have a Hardware mod (in case hardware mods will have updates soon to allow USB HD play)

Thanks!

Hi, this is my very first post. Here's my story... Got a black wii and updated to 4.2e. I followed Adewii's guide, mixed with some of nessie's applications due to differences of versions and I got new super mario bros to work via USB (neogamma v.7. Every other loader does not work). But this was my ONLY working game. I downloaded and tried lots of other games, PAL always, and most of the times my wii freezes before even the game starts. This means i have to unplug it, because power/reset buttons don't function... There where been cases of games that do start and they freeze eventually, always at the same spot. I do have a NAND backup kai priiloader installed. I also confirm the fact that DVDs cannot be read. I'll try your steps and hopefully get this done. Oh also bootmii can only be installed as ios...

To answer your question, no it cant be done I'm afraid...... Have aread of this Morbid_Girl

By popular request, here?s an explanation of the different encryption keys that are used on the Wii.

AES Keys: The Wii uses 128-bit (16-byte) symmetric AES (aka AES-128-CBC) for most encryption.

■Common key (ebe42a225e8593e448d9c5457381aaf7): This is the ?shared secret? that we extracted with the Tweezer Hack. This key is known by all Wiis, but is never used, directly, to encrypt anything. Instead, all titles are encrypted with a random AES key; this key is then encrypted with the Common key and then stored inside a ticket. The ticket is then transmitted along with the content ? on discs, it?s part of the ?certificates? found before the encrypted data starts. Thus, knowing the common key allows you to decrypt most Wii content, as long as you have the right ticket. This key is stored in the OTP area inside the Starlet ARM core inside the Hollywood package.
■SD key (ab01b9d8e1622b08afbad84dbfc2a55d): This is another shared secret ? also stored on the Hollywood, but also found plenty of other places, including inside the firmware images. This key is used by the System Menu (1-2) to encrypt anything before writing it out to the SD card, and it?s used by 1-2 to decrypt anything read from the SD card. This is done mainly for the purpose of obfuscation, to keep people from examining savegames. It?s worth noting that all Wii games save their data to the internal NAND ? no game supports loading or saving data directly to SD. This frees game writers from the requirement of handling this step themselves; they just write the savegame data, unencrypted and unsigned, to their title-data directory inside the NAND filesystem; the system menu then handles everything else. (The real reason for this is probably that it allowed Nintendo to make a system where they didn?t have to expose the details of this encryption ? or any encryption ? to their licensed game developers.) This key is also stored in OTP, and in several places in IOS (for no apparent reason). If you?re using Segher?s tools, you may also be interested in the SD IV (216712e6aa1f689f95c5a22324dc6a98) and the MD5 blanker (0e65378199be4517ab06ec22451a5793), both of which are stored inside the 1-2 binary.
■NAND key (varies): This AES key is used to encrypt the filesystem data on the actual NAND chip itself; it is probably randomly generated during manufacturing and is also stored in the OTP area of the Starlet. This key is used to prevent the contents of the NAND filesystem from being read using a flash chip reader. Nintendo may or may not actually record this key anywhere, since they (theoretically) don?t need to ever use it. In fact, in some similar systems, keys like this are generated automatically by the device itself and (theoretically) never leave it ? the Wii shares some design prinicples with HSMs, but it certainly doesn?t manage to be one. This is another OTP key.
RSA keys: The Wii uses RSA-based authentication in several different places. This is fundamentally different than the AES encryption used for data-hiding, because RSA is an asymmetric cipher, meaning there are no shared secrets ? nothing to be extracted from the Wii. The only RSA keys stored on the Wii are public keys, used to verify authenticity of content.

■CP: Content Protection? This key is used to sign the TMD associated with every title. The TMD contains a SHA1 hash of the contents of that title, proving that it had not been modified. My 24c3 presentation was done by injecting a new .DOL into a Lego Star Wars disc and then forging the signature on its TMD, using a flaw originally discovered by Segher. After that presentation, people eventually discovered the common key needed to decrypt update partitions, allowing others to analyze / disassemble IOS. xt5 (who I had the pleasure of meeting at 24c3) was then able to find the same flaw and implemented it in his Trucha Signer. In fact, from disassembling his code, the core part of it was almost identical to our never-released code ? great minds think alike, eh?
■XS: ?Access?? This is the key that signs tickets, which contain the title keys for individual titles.
■CA: Certification Authority: This key signs both the XS and CP keys.
■MS: ?Master?? This key is used to sign the certificate that contains a copy of your Wii?s public ECC key. This certificate is then appended to savegames on SD cards, so that any other Wii can verify that the key was issued by Nintendo.
■Root: This is the ?grand master key?, which signs the CA key. The public half of this can be found here.
ECC keys: The Wii uses Elliptic Curve Cryptography in a few select places ? primarily, it uses this when it signs savegames before writing them to SD card. ECC is used in ways similar to RSA, but it?s somewhat newer and much faster to run on an embedded system.

Other: For lack of a better place to put it, there is also an HMAC key ? a 20-byte value that is used in a SHA1-based HMAC of the NAND flash contents to prevent them from being tampered with. This is a commonly used scheme in embedded systems, where a device wants to ?sign? something itself, for itself. There are no public vs private keys here ? you need to know this value in order to verify the hash, and you need the same value to generate the hash. This isn?t appropriate for communications between two people, but is perfectly fine for letting the Wii test to see if the chip was pulled, rewritten, and resoldered.

Key storage: The public keys are stored in various places ? these aren?t sensitive, so they don?t really need to be concealed (although at least one of them needs to be protected from modification, and it can then sign the others). The rest are stored in two places:

■Hollywood SEEPROM: After meeting him at 24c3, bunnie was kind enough to decap some chips for me, including a Hollywood. One of those chips is 2kbit serial EEPROM, which stores the MS signature on the the ECC key.
■One-Time Programmable Area: Inside the Starlet ARM core, there are a bunch of things:
1.SHA1 hash of boot1
2.Common key
3.ECC private key
4.NAND HMAC
5.NAND AES key
6.RNG seed
7.other stuff we can?t yet decipher

Download that file unzip it. Stick ur sd card in. Note what letter of drive it is on your pc.

Double click the installer bat file. Enter sd drive letter.

This installs all the files on your sd card.

Remove sd card from your pc.

Insert sd card into your wii.

Select sd card on wii and start the card.

Now follow the instructions.

After a few seconds the homebrew channel etc will be on your wii along with a few other channels.

First off congrats to dell_xps and everyone who has contributed to this forum. Thanks for all the info. My first attempt at this so a tad nervous. I'm going with the batch installer. Am I being naive or is ver 4.2e more complicated to patch than other versions? Lots of videos of earlier firmware on youtube make it look simple!

My console is approaching two years old so it should run -Rs. I've also picked up on alternatives like wiiflow etc. Does anyone have a definitive list of the best running apps or tools for this version? Here goes nothin'...

Just to clear up the cIOS rev thing.

cIOS rev 15 is quite buggy. It's obvious Waninkoko did a rush job of it since the Wii is no longer his proiety. However no one should ever complain because without him we would never have gotten this far with Wii softmodding.

As shown here:

http://www.eurasia.nu/images/submitted/modified_wii_game_iso_boots_fine.png

P.S> Thanks to the author of this thread as I get plenty of hits to my blog (http://adewii.wordpress.com) from here.

What problems you got exactly ? Give more detail on what you've done.... if you were softmodded on 4.0 and took an official 4.2 update you probably overwrote patched IOS files and removed needed ones.

EDIT : Anyone with a softmodded wii older than 4.2 who wanna update to 4.2 use THIS (http://adewii.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/howto-safely-upgrade-to-system-menu-4-2/)

Alright, I've tried this tutorial out twice now and I'm still running into the same error. I'm more than certain that I followed the instructions properly as I encountered no issues or likely, so I'm dismissing that theory for now.

Now, whenever I try booting up a game through uLoader, it gives me a DVD Error -2. Now, abe's site mentions that 'D3-2' drives can't run burned dvd's or that it's an outdated dvdx version.
The dvdx version I got was the one in the hackmii package obtained from their site, so I'm assuming it's up to date.

Is there any work-around to this, or am fudging something up? Any feedback or solutions are well appreciated.

Thanks in advance / R.

I believe they're.. +R, I could be mistaken.
This is not a black wii, it's an ordinary white one.
As for the cIOS's.. Uhh, I did all of those mentioned on the abewii's site. Did I miss any?

Is there any way around this other than booting through USB?

I just recently got this wii. I reformated one of my extern HDD's to that format that's required for uLoader and it's working perfectly well. I guess I'll just have to stick with this process then, as I doubt I'll ever get it to work disc-wise.

Remember if you have a usb stick, 8GB or more would work also just means only having 1 or 2 games on a stick at a time depending on how big the stick was m8.
Give it a try if you can, that way we know for sure that the new drives def dont play back DVDR's.

From the reading I have been doing the black wiis will not play dvd backups at all

All to do with the dvd chipset on these new wiis

The only option is to load your backup games onto a usbhdd and run from there

Bit of a bummer but games will load faster and easier than having discs everywhere I suppose

Wii consoles purchased towards the later half of 2009, including all black Wii consoles have a newer DVD drive (D3-2) inside them. These Wii consoles will not play games from blank DVD discs, they will however work with a USB loader. Try copying the game using the wii's drive to your memory stick m8.
Dont use a hard drive myself but there's plenty of peeps on here will let you know what to do.

Use your wbfs manager to access your pen drive tobb, windows wont see your drive once in wbfs so youll have to use wbfs manager to load on/off your iso's

Cant remember exactly, but when installing the WAD files you press the + on the Wii remote, give that a go, might be getting confused with an older wad manager though.

Just wanted to say a massive thanks and give mad props for the tutorial! What seemed like a daunting process at first became a simple operation thanks to this guide. And with NSMB now playing on my Wii, I'm one happy 'first time' soft modder and have one happy daughter!! (I opted for the 4.2E guide as this seemed relatively straight forward) However, getting a little cocky amidst all the excitement I decided to try a NTSC file instead of PAL, as I noticed the option for this on the 'configure' page of Uloader. Once I'd sent the wife out to purchase some 'quality' dvd-r's (she came back with dvd+r's!!) as I'd had success with my last TDK -R, I tried Rec Room Games and Cooking Mama 2 to no avail. I've put this down to the +r, but would I be right in thinking I'll be able to play 'NTSC' ? (I'm just burning Mini Desktop Racing, Pal version, on a +r just to eliminate the type of disc and format) I was also wondering how 'future proof' this soft mod is? I only use the Wii for gaming, but what about any future updates to the Wii, will these invalidate the mod? I'll be doing this to a mates console (he's been looking at mod chips and solderless solutions now his Wii is out of warranty) but I don't want to have to offer '24 hour' support if the mod stops working!!! (His tech abilities amount to zero!)
Once again, a massive thanks . . . . . .

Sli107
29th December, 2009, 10:13 AM
Just to add to the above, Mini Desktop Racing worked! Must be the format! (PAL v NTSC)

dell_xps
29th December, 2009, 10:27 AM
In ULoader in the config options, set it to NTSC try 50HZs and the 60HZs option, should play back NTSC titles no problem.
Future proof, depends on Nintendo, the new mario game has the latest protection on it, thats already cracked, and should play back in your new softmodded 4.2E Wii.
If and when they bring out a newer firmware and protection, there's always a 99.9% chance rate it will be cracked within days/weeks.

Hiya folks,

this is my first post. Hope you're all well!

I bought a black Wii a week ago and started to read about HomeBrew and using a USB device to load backups.

I updated the menu to 4.2e. I installed Homebrew and DVDx.

It will not let me install Bootmii as boot2 and instead offers me the option of installing Bootmii as IOS. I have not done this as I would be able to back up but not restore in the event of a brick or issue.

I looked at PreLoader and tried to install 0.30. I get an error so tried 0.29 intsead - this too errors.

So now I'm wondering if a modchip is actually easier than a wild goosechase???

Can anyone help please? I'm pretty good at following instructions...

Thanks

If you have the homebrew channel on m8, skip the nand backup bit and put the rest of the files on to softmod your Wii.
Very unlikely you will brick your Wii with this tut, just read everything twice, and you'll be fine.

Hi Dell_XPS

I done as you suggested and I now have 1 extra icon in my Menu - ULoader. I assume I can now make a copy of my backed ISO on to a USB key, insert into the Wii and use ULoader to boot that ISO? I assume I have to have ULoader format my USB key first - but if I do that, how will my PC see it for the copy of the ISO from my PC to USB key?

ANSWER:
Ok, I downloaded and installed WBFS Manager 3.0
I then formatted my 16GB USB key using WBFS (which I hope at a later date I can get back to NTFS and use a 300GB external drive instead!)
I then added an ISO
Finally, I took the USB key plugged into the Wii, switched on, used ULoader and choose Load - and it just froze. Left it like that for over 1 minute and had to hard reboot.
Any ideas?????

Also, when I exit out of ULoader, I get Exception (DSI), Stack Dump and Code Dump messages.

Hello,

Signed up to send my thanks to dell_xps (haha, using an XPS m1530 atm too) for this immensely easy to follow guide. Took me about 15 minutes to get everything sorted, now just need to purchase a few DVD-Rs tomorrow and I should hopefully be set.

However, just wondering what the situation is concerning Wii System Updates? Assumedly the advice is not to update; is there an auto-update mechanism in the Wii, given I sometimes play online and the Wii is connected to the Wifi.

Finally, what about games which are pre-packaged with updates?

Thanks for your help, and apologies if these questions have been asked/covered already.

dell_xps
30th December, 2009, 11:22 AM
4.2E is the latest, so nothing to update to as yet, it usually pops up on the screen if there is an update when you connect to the internet via the wifi, just say no.
As for games, if it ever asks you to update to play a game, look for another version that has the update taken out, never update your PAL Wii with an NTSC/JAP title or you will brick it.
HTH
PS You can play backup games on line by the way.

Hi Dell_XPS

I took the USB key and formatted again with WBFS Manager (which strangely for a 16GB stick only takes about 2 seconds! - so must only be formatting the boot sector).

I added an ISO back onto the stick and plugged into my Wii. This time the ISO does load with uLoader!

Now this is the funny part (literally hillerious for anyone reading!). The ISO is of my wifes My Body Coach! We also have the original game, but I got the ISO from a friend so I can test the softmod. Can I use imgBurn to make an ISO of my own games and put them on the USB stick so I never have to use the CD's? I ask because I'm not sure if my PC can read a Wii game and then what the process is to get it onto a USB....

Also, when I launhc the game the options are to launch it with different IOS versions. Mines is set to IOS222. I'm gussing IOS is simular to O/S and there is an operating system. So if a backup fails to load with IOS222 can I change it to IOSxxx??

Thanks.

Whoever thought of this forum and this topic is either an insider at Nintendo or a brain box! Whichever the case, I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say THANK YOU very much! You went through the trouble of testing this, documenting it and helping others.... Much apprecited.

Hi

I have now donw the following:

1. Softmod with 4.2e and Homebrew channel
2. Backed up my game to USB
3. Run the game on my Wii
4. Backed up from my USB key to my PC and vice versa

Works great so far!

I have a few more questions (Dell XPS, sorry to be a pain!)

1. How can I add icons to my backed up games which reside on the USB stick? At the moment uLoader (which looks pants!) only has grey icons with the names of my backups and this dodgy captain hook for a cursor!

2. How can I add icons for these games directly to the Wii menu so I do not have to go via uLoader?

3. Running games from my USB key, where will the game data be saved?

4. Homebrew apps work from the SD card. Is it possible to run apps such as USB Loader 1.1 directly form the Wii or from the USB key?

5. What is the latest version of uLoader? I have seen 1.x and 2.x and 3.x around but will not use until I know the official lastest version

Thanks! Another day accomplished and another day awaits!

Hi, i'm new here. I just got my Wii yesterday and interested to soft-mod my Wii for the first time ever. So i'd like to ask you guys, the expert, and anyone who success in soft modding Wii by following the tutorial that Dell XPS provided.

After a read through the whole tutorial I have some question to be clarified if possible..

1. Can this tut be used with other 4.2x ?
2. If my Wii use D3-2 drive, the only option for me to play backup games(ISO) is via USB loader, am i correct?
3. When you say, play backup games from USB, is that mean any USB thumb drive will do?
4. If at any given time, while soft modding, my Wii appears to to be frozen, hangs, crashes or any kind of error, what is the correct procedure should i take? Hitting a reset button will do?
5. If at any given time, while soft modding, i realize i messed up some thing or skip through a process, will i be able to start all over again(put Wii back into Virgin state)? How?
6. I heard that Wii can be bricked easily, how to avoid that? If it happen, what should i do? Is there any fix for bricked Wii?
7. After complete soft modding, will i be able to update(via internet) the new official firmware version in the future? Will the update mess up the mod?

That's all i can think of right now. Thank you in advance.

EDIT: OK, dont worry about all those questions. I've soft modding my Wii and success without any problem. But when I want to load an ISO game from USB stick(via uLoader), most of the time the game crashes right after safety precaution intro(but Wii still working fine) i have to press home to get out to the main menu.
I already set to IOS249 but still not working.
EDIT2: I tested with 2 games, Cooking Mama 2: World Kitchen and Metal Slug Anthology. Both crashes after safety precaution intro.

Hi Dell_xps, I have successfully installed the homebrew etc but when as you say above I go to the homebrew channel and press the home button there is no bootmii option on this menu.

Cheers

I have a NTSC of Wii fit+, tried the above settings just got the black screen, same settings but NTSC this time and it played no problem.
Played new Mario game, all games that require 002 fix, and NTSC titles.
Enjoy peeps.

Ranger, try this:

1. In the Wii menu, choose uLoader
2. Click on Start
3. uLoader will show you the games on your memory stick, choose a game by hovering over it with the Wii remote and pressing A
4. This will bring up a screen with options for the game you chose (i.e Load, Configure etc). Choose Configure and here you can choose IOS, NTSC, PAL etc)
