I have both an Omnikey and smargo. I used both on a dm800 and currently have an atom server running smargo's. The omnikey is pretty cheap compared to the other choices. They run the sky card well using cccam 2.1.3 with ECM times around 0.1 although with omnikey + newcs I had ECM of 0.08 with the Sly 0963.
I use smargo's now rather than omnikeys now as they are smaller and compact :D

hi
it depends to what emu you are using it on. on newcs omnikey is better. but for cccam smargo is the business.

Not sure if this counts for anything but we sell far more of the Omnikey 3121 over the other 2, but then they are less than half the price... Also seem very popular in Denmark of late...

Spot on, I forgot to mention that. Very solid with NewCs.

Indeed. I only use smargo's because they have no cable and look tidy but where a smargo costs ?30-?40 an omni key can be brought at around ?9 and pretty much does the same thing :D

External card readers are used by users who run a seperate server. ie, a pc running linux. This allows the user to experiment with different boxes etc without having their server going on and off.....

But at the same time they could use a seperate dreambox?

If you wanted to yes you could...but using a dedicated server can process a lot more connections and because it has more RAM and a faster cpu, it makes the job so much easier. Also it can help extend the life of a STB as you do not need to have it on stand-by. You can use a old pc you have lying around for a server. A lot cheaper than buying another STB

I get these speeds with the dm500 internal card reader?
Yes, the dm500 performs at those speeds with the 0963 caid. However I dont want my dm to run 24/7 so I have a mini itx pc running my cards. At one point i even used a nslu2 to run a server...

Yeah the 3121 is a very good purchase.

On a similar subject, I can have only one card in my DB500 but if I have more cards will I need an external card reader? how to connect it to the box? By using the RS232 on the back of the box?

Ideally if you want to share more cards one will need to build a pc based server. Its not very hard and can be done cheaply. With the DM500 you cannot use the usb card readers such as Smargo or Omnikey as the drivers available are only for Enigma 2 (Dm 7xxx and 8xx series). Not too sure about the rs232 option though mate, maybe someone else knows about this?

question still remains. Is there any advantage of using a card reader than a dm500 buit in slot?
I have been reading cards with dm500 with no issues at all

I have a PC Pentium 4 with 1 GB RAM, any Linux OS will be OK such as Redhat?
With the cards are these are physical not virtual cards? I mean there are 4 USB ports on the PC so I can have up to 4 card readers or may be use USB hub? Will Linux OS have all drivers for them?
Thanks

telling you how to set up a server is against the rules. you would need linux server os ie, ubuntu server.

Thanks Jackpot
I like to play with the software more than anything else because I work in IT so it is something similar to my day to day work, not intended to do anything with C/S.
Cheers

hi
i have used both smargo and omnikey 3121 and they are both solid.
for newcs server omnikey is awesome and runs very good without any problem.
for cccam server smargo is the best as you do not have to configure anything just plug and go. also run very sweet.

There is a driver you can download off most of the download servers that is said to work but im not sure what receiver your going to use but i think its some thing to do with getting it to go in to Phoenix mode and stay in phoenix mode, when i got it working on a linux pc i used the comands below and it did work didnt use them on the dreambox as i was not sure if they would work also people that have them working on linxu pc and on some dreamboxs have said they do work well another reader to look at that works well with some cards is the infinity usb smart this one is more built for linux take from there site
The core functionality is a phoenix/smartmouse interface, compatible with any Windows, Linux-based system or embedded Linux-based systems like DreamBox, Set-top boxes (STB) or other industrial controller.
cd /home/2tone/nftytool-1.1
sudo ./nftytool -p phoenix -- -p phoenix -f 3.58 -e
