My BMW 525d E60, 2004_7 couldn't recently regenerate the DPF and it loses engine power due to that reason. The official document, which explains the reasons that this might be happening can be found here https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=483854&d=1419885248

1. As far as I understand, the following requirements are must in order to be able to regenerate the DPF:

- Fault codes 480A and 481A have the status "currently not present".
- Engine temperature >75° C (normal operating temperature).
- Exhaust-gas temperature upstream of the diesel particulate filter>240° C.
- Sufficient fuel present (fuel reserve lamp is not lit).
- Regeneration is aborted if the fuel reserve lamp lights up.
- No fault code concerning air, exhaust gas, or sensors stored in the DDE.
- A constant travelling speed above approx. approx. 38 mph; a travelling speed above approx. approx. 55 mph is ideal for regeneration. The exhaust-gas temperature increases to above 600° C.
- Successful regeneration takes place at an exhaust-gas temperature above 500° C.

2. The car has the following fault codes:
- 4530 Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE): charge-air pressure control, control deviation. This one appeared while trying to force the car to regenerate, basically because of the 3-4 RPM.
- 480A Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE): particulate filter system
- 481A Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE): particulate filter system
- 4587 DDE: Heated fuel filter. This one no longer exists, because I replaced the fuel filter earlier today. It was indeed clogged.

The DPF related ones come back after some time of driving.

3. I believe the temperatures are okay, because the Coolant temperature exceeded 75 °C and the catalytic converter upstream Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGR) exceeded 240 °C.

A collection of pictures during the diagnostic: https://imgur.com/a/5NpnWfH. Exhaust temperature upstream catalytic converter was about a value of 393 °C, but the picture was taken earlier, that's why it is 141.96 °C.

I believe I don't have to replace the glow plugs and their controller, because there is no fault code for them. Also both thermostats should be okay, judging by fact that the temperatures were matching the ones needed for the regeneration.

What else could be wrong? Why does it say that the regeneration is enabled and it is requested, but it is not active?

To get rid of 480A and 481A you need to carry out DPF replacement procedure. Those codes appear after 250000km because that's how long BMW considers DPF to be good. It may be completely fine but that won't stop the codes from appearing
