You can use VCDS-lite with that cable, not the full VCDS.

There is never same version. If new eeprom is needed than major number is added like 9 in 9.2 if just loader is different with same eeprom than minor number is changed. It is already wrote here in thread, just read.

Greetings everyone!

I have this HW 0x46 type pcb, the GAL chip is not connected to atmega. I use 9.2 loader.
The problem I'm having is connection related. I write the flash, eeprom, fusebits and lockbits by usbASP, write FTDI eeprom by Mprog and after that I use the EEWriteLang successfully.
I hook the cable up to a car, start VCDS test, everything OK, but after/during an auto-scan the cable disconnects. It works for about 5 minutes then VCDS freezes and the HWType says Interface not found.
The Device Manager shows the cable as Ross-Tech device but it has a small yellow exclamation mark, stating that something is not working right.
After rewriting everything again, it works but only for a small amount of time...

I'm guessing the FTDI chip is cooked or something, what are your thoughts people?

I suspect your FT to be damaged. See if is correctly writen and try again.
You can try directly write with EEWriter. If not work, uncheck "Autodetect VID/PID" and replace 24 with 20.
If not work, FT defective or Atmega defective. 90% FT defective. Can try write Atmega with USB ISP programmer, the communication can be interrupted by an altered firmware.

Experiments with genuine should be carried out with extreme caution.
FTDI chip is the crucial thing, which cannot be spoiled/lost/etc.
ATmega contents can be easily backed up and restored to other/replacement chip.

As for the remaining components - nowadays Chinese PCB are superior to the ones HEX Microsystems used a decade ago (lack of protective diodes, lack of CAN filters, etc...)

I have this interface that works just fine on CAN, but not on K Line. It shows "K1: SHORT TO GROUND" even if I only apply 12V on the bench, so we can exclude any actual short in the car.

IF your oem cable is REALY FA20, your FTDI must be FT232B. This haven't "ChipID".
But "no comunication" with Atmega can be:
1. FTDI defective or
2. Atmega content altered or
3 Atmega defective.

In some parts of the world this is not street legal and i am not sure how long the bulbs will last but anyway its good in that it does work.

So the instruction are:

Log on to the car.31347

1/ Select control unit 09 Central Electrics

First change left side

2/ Select Leuchte 0 BLK VL B36-Lichtfunktion C 0
3/ Change to Standlicht allgemein (Schlusslitch; Positionslicht; Begrenzungslicht) - Parking light in general (tail lamp, position light, marker light)
4/ Save with green tick and when asked enter security code 31347
5/ Select Dimmwert CD 0 and change to a number between 0 - 100 (100 being brightest) and tick green box
6/ Select Lichtfunktion E 0 and change to Blinken links Dunkelphase and tick green box
7/ Select Dimming Direction EF 0 and change to minimize and tick green box

Left side is now complete, go outside and look at your indicator.

I have repaired an interface dating back to ~2008 ant it already contained FT232RQ, which is ChipID equipped.

Biggest issues would be two in his case:
1) ATmega content altered (small chance to repair) or chip itself defective to a point it's impossible to read information from it
2) FTDI dead.

Both of these mean that the cable is toast and can only be converted to a clone after repairs have been carried out.

Anyway, it's impossible to tell anything more without analysing/inspecting the cable

He said FA20. That made me think about FT232BL. Asked him read content of FT232 and post here-he didn't do.
If is RQ..problems.

No need to desolder it at all. It's not powered up anyway. Your problem is elsewhere

No need to be powered. Time to time i conlusioned that U10 make short (probably get defective). Until now about 8-9 cables with short circuit because of that U10 AES. Few times i suspect AES broken FTDI too.

i have been looking obd2tool.com, and they sell two different versions of the HEX V2 one is atmega 162 chip based for around $30 and they also do another HEX V2 which has the ARM or something which im unsureof for $116.00.

Does anyone know where we can get theses cables other than there or is there somewhere else that is producing them obviously i know theses are clones also. As cant seem to find a source for them so unsure where to get them.

Also what is the difference between theses two interfaces, is the one just a high quality HEX V2 Clone and the atmega a rebrandded HEX-CAN.
Only reason im asking is I need a reliable cable that works on newer cars after 2016. Is my understanding correct that the atmega chip type wont work on 2016+ or is it just hit and miss. is the $116 one worth buying an work as a genuine would can u do online updates an not worrie about it bricking

I just received my Option 2 HEX-V2 DIY ATMEGA162 + FT232RQ + AVR programmer from obd2cartool.com and it did not come with any software.
Am I able to run the latest 20.4.1 official installer from Ross-Tech as long as I keep the Internet connection disabled, or do I require a hacked version from obd2cartool or elsewhere? Thanks!

Ok, I now have everything along with official 19.6.2.
I really don't want to have the device blacklisted in the first attempt at installation, so Wifi is currently off.
I connected the unit to USB and OBD2 and ran VAGCOM_HWType.exe but got the dreaded "Interface not found" message.
Do I need to install VCDS or some drivers first? I see the device in Device Manager, but of course the driver is not yet installed.

EDIT: So, even though this is the recommended device to buy according to kolimer's README, it's still not clear to me if I will need to reflash FTDI and the EEPROM.

So read the README file once again. It is prepared in such way, that every single word which is there, is there for a reason and not extra. Not just skim-read it, but study it carefully like you'd be reading an AFM before operating an aircraft.

Looks like you got the "DIY" version. DIY is not for everyone, it's just for those who understand and know what they are doing OR are able to study on their own. Again, I can easily find all the answers in the listing's description, you just need to read:

I connected the unit to USB and OBD2 and ran VAGCOM_HWType.exe but got the dreaded "Interface not found" message.
Do I need to install VCDS or some drivers first? I see the device in Device Manager, but of course the driver is not yet installed.

EDIT: So, even though this is the recommended device to buy according to kolimer's README, it's still not clear to me if I will need to reflash FTDI and the EEPROM.

I'll answer my own question in hopes that it will help others in the future.
Does "Interface not found" mean that your FTDI EEPROM is pooched and needs to be reflashed as per Kolimer's intructions?.....the answer: not necessarily.

My device was detected fine by Windows and Linux (lsusb) with serial RT000001.
After installing VCDS and the associated drivers, I ran VAGCOM_HWType.exe once again, only this time it was properly detected and with FW 1.96 already loaded.
Following the instructions and launching VCDSLoader.exe, I'm good to go. Didn't need to flash a thing.

Hi, the dealer changed the clutch of my mk6. At least he says he did. Can i check with vcds if there is a new clutch installed? I saw on a dutch website you have to look in measuring blocks - group 95 block 3 for clutch 1 and group 115 block 3 for clutch 2. If new clutch is installed it should say around 11mm. Is this correct? Because clutch 1 is indeed 11mm, but clutch 2 is 15mm. They say 17mm is the max. So he only changed clutch 1??

I have an interface for version 16.80 (HW type 0x46) and want to use it with the latest version and Kolimer Loader 9.2.
Can anyone tell me the output of VAGCOM_HWType.exe after a successful flash? My current interface returns:

Since it has already FW Version 1.96, I tried to use it with the loader, but it did not work. VCDS found the interface but said that it was not connected to the car, so I think I have to flash the ATMEGA162 with correct values?

I have read the PDF file and many pages on this thread, which was a bit confusing since there is so much random information.
So I wanted to ask if I figured out the correct steps for updating my interface:


1. Lift pin 9 of the STC chip (image 1)
(Or do I remove it completely? Do I have to resolder it after flashing?)

2. Solder one wire to pin 4 (RESET) on ATMEGA162 chip
(Is there a better soldering point for RESET? That area is pretty bad to reach and the pins are really tiny)

3. Solder 3 wires to MCP2515 chip:
- pin13 = MOSI
- pin14 = MISO
- pin15 = SCK

4. Solder VCC (to Output) and GND to the linear voltage regulator (L7805CV) and apply 5V there?
(Or should I just plug the interface into the car for 12V supply while programming?)


Assuming the soldering points are correct, I'd have all 6 connections for the USBASP programmer.
I'd like to use German language of VCDS, So I'd use the "eepromavr_HW_0x46_DRV.bin" and edit the USBASP_write_0x46.cmd to use this .bin file?

What do I do next? Simply run "USBASP_write_0x46.cmd"? As Administrator or just normal?
What is the Fuse&Lock window image good for in the PDF? Do I have to do anything else except for flashing with the cmd file here?

The "real \/2" cable that I bought doesnt seem to work well on my older cars. B6 A4 and MK4 GTI. It does connect to 01-Engine and HVAC, does not work on ABS or Airbag. Attempts connecting and returns error "Kline init fail". Is this a indication that one of the two K-lines is no good?

Perhaps it works good on CANBUS cars but I havent tried it out yet. I have it running on the latest VCDS with no loader and connected to the internet, shows as valid every time.

Hello to one and all. So i have a Vag-com v19.6.1 cable which I've updated to version v20.4.1 and I'm using Kolimers loader v9.2 (thank you Kolimer for an excellent software)
The software works and runs for about 6 or 7 times, but then when I go to open for example the Engine button it does not work, I have to re-flash the cable and then it works again.
I'm using 2 laptops, one is running Windows 7 64 bit, the othe one Windows 7 32 bit, has anyone else had this problem ? Another thing I've just remembered is, the when I go into fault codes it tells me that it cannot display them due to vcds being un-licenced, then I reflash the cable and all is well again. So i'm a bit puzzled. The original 19.6 worked perfect.
Any ideas welcomed.

First of all cut the wire to R50 or the best to remove these 2 parts: STC chip and D7. As I know it's a hardware protection and by time it causes issue. Useless part of PCB. Hopefully it will solve your Bootloader problem.
If not, then you have to use an USBisp / USBasp programmer.

cable of your friend is certainly Atmega162 based. buy new one with Atmega162/16v8/FTDI132x and it will work ! (25$ on AliExpress)

Until then, just wanted to ask about my VCDS clone. It works, but it says CAN: not ready. I will require to activate my cd changer function in my cd player. When i scan for radio, it communicates with it( volume change) but i get a error saying : too many errors.

I got the same output with VCIUPDATE, however the hex code had a few numbers different as mine has an older version 2020.01.13.

My cable still has trouble connecting to most modules, it works on 01-Engine but will not connect to ABS or Instrument Cluster, K-Line init failed error. Trying to get a response from the seller. Perhaps its a hardware issue.

So i have a vcds interface with error (interface not found)
So i'm trying to flash EEPROM using VAGCOM_EEWriteLang.exe but i'm facing the interface is not in bootloader mode problem

It's my first post here but i read a lot of posts and i like very much what you do. Congratulations you all !
I don't own a vag car (my wife does :D) and i don't work in a close domain. Electronics is my hobby and programing it's my job. So please take me as a begginer.


I'm encountering some issues with a cable. About 2 years ago i bought one cable from china v17.1 with the following configuration: FT232RL, ATMEGA162 and ATF16V8B.
I didn't used it because i managed to kill it from the first usage (didn't used the crack :D).
Then after few months i bought another cable. This was 17.8 with FT232RL, ATMEGA162 and PALCE 16V8H (it worked that time).


These days i had some time and i wanted to update them.
I have updated both cables atmega with v9.2 loader hardware 0x44 with verification and everything went fine.
Next step was to check the ftdi chip. I reprogrammed them to 0403 / FA24.


On the workbench (only power applied) i tried to test using HWType tool. None was working.
One cable had green light on (v17.1) and one was blinking red(v17.8).


I've checked the green light one and i found that the FTDI chip was broken, so i have replaced it, reprogrammed it and it's done.


Next i wanted to find out what was happening with the red blinking cable (17.8). I did and electrical check (joints and voltage) and everything seems to be fine. When it's connected to the power supply it drains about 220 mA current. It's like always trying to boot and restart. As i saw on the working one the current of 220 mA is drained when you connect it till it "boot" (red light dissapears and green appears), then the current stays at ~ 70 mA.
I suspect that PALCE chip is doing something weird and probably it doesn't like the v9.2 loader. Did someone encountered such an issue ? Is there a specific dump for PALCE to work with v9.2 ?

Regarding ROSS-USA ... you're right... good notice. The archive in the kolimer's v9.2 loader had a directory called: "Projects TL866+Progisp". Here were the binaries for TL866 programmer, which i use, and surprising this file: "VCDS HW 0x44 LB v2.mpj" contains ROSS-USA in AVR instead of ROSSTECH as it is in "eepromavr_HW_0x44.bin". I will use the binaries in the root folder to solve this issue.

I will come back with feedback after i will receive the order for ftdi and gal chip.

Jan4 came to the rescue... It was not enough to flash the cable just connected to the PC and Car. Strange, but it had to be connected to a seperate 12V power supply, instead of the Car's 12V. Then it would flash, and it works on VCDS 20.4.1 now.

At the time of order it was with VCDS 19.6.1. It came with a little CD-Rom with the software, but I do not have a drive, so I try to get it to work anyway. According to the documentation it should come with a bootloader and be ready to update. This is what I have done so far:

Downloaded VCDS Release 20.4 from Ross-tech
Downloaded Kolima's VCDSLoader_v9.2.zip
Installed VCDS Release 20.4
Connected the cable to the car and PC
Run VAGCOM_HWType.exe to confirm connection. It was OK - reported FW 1.96 / HW 0x46 / English only / Bootloader Enabled
Copied VCDSLoader.exe into installed directory and created link.
Run VCDSLoader.exe (it renamed to VCDS.exeL as it should)

Here is the problem...I start VCDS, and it says 'First use / No config file found'. I then go into 'Options' and press 'Test'. But it comes with 'Interface: Not Found!'.

I then tried to flash EEPROM using VAGCOM_EEWriteLang.exe, and using just English language. It starts the flashing, but stops with the error 'Error flashing custom firmware'.

Any ideas of how I can get this to work would be great.

I have a friend that has an old clone VCDS 11.3 cable without software. He is 200km away from me and I tried to remotely check what kind of cable it has.

HWtype says the following:

I had an old 11.11.3 installer from a chinese cable, the driver detects the cable on device manager but vcds does not detect the cable. I think this software was for cables with nec chip.
I then tried with vcds 19.6 and 9.2 loader from Kolimer and VCDS detects the cable but it reports function failure because probably of the old firmware version ( 1.84 ). As the bootloader is disabled I have no way of updating it.

So, long story short, I need an old VCDS version + loader/crack/whatever that can work with this cable. I know this is not the ideal thing, but he really needs to connect to the car and see what is going on with the gearbox of a caddy mk3 and I have no quicker way than try to make that cable work.


I would really appreciate if someone can send me, or direct me to the version that I need.

Thanks man! it worked. Now the problem is that the car is from 2014 and the software version is too old. damm... One of the 11.11.3 versions offered to upgrade the firmware from 1.84 to 1.91. I'm sure this will kill the cable right?

Yes, I think it will be if you do update. Disassemble the interface casing and check what PCB you have. (Atmega 162 or ARM)
Upload PCB pictures .
Maybe someone can advise you more.

yes, your câble can be updated. Use kolimer package.
If bootloader is disable, you need to use an USBsap external programmer (less than 10$ on AliExpress)
to be sure, use HWtype.exe (inclued in kolimer’s package) to check if bootloader is enable or not

In this case try to update more times, sometimes it helps and at the 2nd or 3rd time it can finish the process successfully.
If not, then flash it with the "old" method. For this you will need:
- USBasp / USBisp
- Jumper cables (6 pcs of Female-Female)

But after a bit of reading I realized this adapters seams not to going to work.

First I'd like to thank you for your help much; would you please give me a list of tools required to repair and where to get the dump file to program the atmega controller;

what happened to my cable was I thought a cloned cable an original one so, I went to ross tech website and downloaded the latest software ver 20 and ran it without any loader I was naive ; the cable gave status : Not plugged into car despite it was connected to obd connector of a Golf 6 car

the problem seems to me that an original software got the cable disabled/banned. I played with a couple of tools in order to undo what the original software has done; I programmed the FTDI USB interface but I couldn't get to the atmeg controller expecting it has a boot loader to program.

I ordered USBASP programmer from local dealer. But I need a road map; I know about lots of things now the atmeg is used to communicate to car and ftdi is usb controller i know about pinouts of the obd; I know about ftdi FTDI232RL which is my case MY GAL controller is PALCE

I have been searching, studying your forum but, I still confused and i need a roadmap/steps and dump/tools if it does not bother You.
