Hello Everyone!
I thought that I would compile all of the information I gathered when remapping my car so it can be easier for beginners. There were many things that confused me so I hope that this helps.
Before you get started it is important to check that your car can be reprogrammed through the OBDII port. Some require the ecu to be taken out of the car and it to be tuned on the bench. It is also recommended that when using a clone unit that your car is no older than 2014.
Here is a rundown of everything you will need and how much it will cost:
1. Kess v2 Clone unit - You can find these all across AliExpress and eBay, it is important to note that there are two main revisions created by the Chinese. You want the second version. The easy way to identify the second version is that the two LED's are vertically aligned. $100 USD
2. Ksuite - You will get a version of Ksuite with your Kess v2 however this version is usually old which is not ideal. The best version is 2.90 however I chose to use 2.80 with a checksum mod. Please note that 2.80 was never officially cracked and the crack is just an older version with a skin change designed to scam people. I chose this version as it was bundled with a DLL mod that could better perform checksum calculations. You should always try to make sure the checksums are done in your file beforehand but this acts as a good way to double check. As this is harder to find I will post a link to it here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005434639461.html $7 USD
3. Voltage Stabaliser - There is a lot of different information regarding voltage stabalisers, some say that they just send it and don't use one, some say that they use a battery charger. Personally I think that at the very minimum you need a battery charger to juice it up before you run the tune. You need to make sure that the voltage is between 12.5 and 14.5 volts when writing to the ECU. Some cars such as BMW's can draw 60A when writing, my car drew 40A to begin with and then settled on 7A. Personally I cannot recommend a voltage stabaliser enough, since we are already using clone gear you should make sure that everything else is perfect. I chose a chinese option which was price comparable to a good charger. There are two main options, the MST-80+ and the MST-90+, the 90 is newer but I heard that it can sometimes have some issues so I went for the 80. It worked perfectly holding my battery at an ideal 13.7V. You buy them off AliExpress or eBay. $270 USD (shipping inc)
4. Laptop - You need either a Windows 7 or Windows XP laptop to run the Ksuite software. If you use a newer laptop it can become unstable and brick your ecu if it fails during the write. I used a Windows XP laptop with a fresh install to ensure that there weren't any errors. It also helped that I didn't setup internet as Ksuite fails when connected to the internet. $50 USD
5. Tune File - There are many services that sell you files so it can be difficult choosing. Initially I chose one from a pack on eBay. This failed but fortunately I was able to recover using the original file. On my second attempt having sought some advice I went with UltraTec Tuning which is an online service. They are brilliant and I cannot recommend them enough. https://files.ultratectuning.co.uk/#/ $30 USD
The total cost of all these is about $460 USD.
Now it is time to talk about the tuning which is pretty basic but I have some tips:
- If the connection fails in Ksuite make sure that you have installed the drivers that popup when you plug it into the laptop
- Make sure to do a read before you write. This will ensure that everything is in working order.
- Make sure that you have requested for checksums to be done when using UltrTec.
- You can compare the your original file to the tuned file using https://www.diffnow.com/compare-files you should only notice about 1000 changes and it should look pretty similar.
- Select CAN to remap.
- Follow EXACTLY what it says on Ksuite.
Feel free to ask any questions and I will reply to the best of my ability.
If you disagree in any way please reply so everyone can be informed.
