To all who have emailed me and need the solution if you are based with an ISP blocking CCam traffic.
While this is an up and down situation, most ISPs, especially the ME have been blocking CCam traffic on advent of the world cup. This could remain post the event. The solution is simple but will require some work from your end.
1. A VPN connection is needed to feed your DM or suitable unit to. This can be either:
a) DM is connected to your PC and your PC manages the VPN and net connection
b) DM is connected to a router feeding your internet connection
In most cases, its B. So lets resolve:
Unless you have a specific VPN router, most routers do not allow you to create a tunnel or VPN connection. You will need to install a modified 3rd party software for that router. For these google search for ddr-wrt, linksysinfo or tomatovpn (most popular).
Follow the exact instructions to upgrade and make sure you have the correct router and firmware. I personally use the best: Linksys WRT54GL and its supported by several 3rd party firmwares
The next step is to get a VPN account. There are many out there. I will not go into this but suffice to say that PPTP accounts will NOT work. You will need an OPenVPN type setup that will provide you with 3 key files:
ca.crt file which is the main certificate file
a crt file with your subscription to the vpn for authentication
a personal key file with your vpn details
Once this is obtained and you have installed and flashed your router with the 3rd party firmware - TomatoVPN recomended - log into your router and access the VPN section. Click on "Client".
A) In the basic section, enter your vpn sever details, port and other info provided by the VPN provider. Save.
B) Then go to Advnaced. There enter the compression used and other info related to the VPN provider. In most cases, you leave all as is except the encryption option. Most VPN are using BF-CBC. Save
C) Then go to Keys. Open with notepad your certificates (3 files). They will all start with ---------START and end with -------
Copy the contents of ca.crt into the first box. Copy your personal certificate contents into the second. Copy your personal key into the 3rd box. Save
Click the Start Now button. If you did everything correctly, you should see VPN movement in the status section. Browse a typically blocked site and if you access it, then you are good to go!
NOTE:
1. You can set the vpn to start automatically when the router starts. This is in the Basic section. It will avoid you from loging into the router to start it periodically.
2. Occassionally, the VPN will drop. You can know this in DM using CCam Info and checking the server status. if they are all red, simply unplug the router, wait 5 sec and replug. Run CCam Info again and check servers and they will be back on.
--------------------------------------------------
Its not as complicated but some reading at the firmware sections needs to be done. There are growing number of routers that are being supported but always check the list. Many 3rd party firmwares exist and they all work on specific routers.
Of choice, run a linksys WRT54GL version 1.1 with TomatoVPN.
At some stage, I will do snaps of the guide, but for now, the idea is that there is a solution for those who need it. VPNs vary in price so shop around but make sure you get the one offering you the 3 files I noted. PPTP connections will NOT work.
