    Default XP sata driver

    Hi all,

New to the site and have found it very helpfull so far.

I'm currently trying to install a sata hard drive (WD1600 caviar se) into an acer aspire e500 desktop. The problem is that the OS is xp and it isn't recognising the hard drive.

Is there a sata driver that I need to instal? If there is, does any one know where I could get one.

    Thanks

download sata drivers for your PC from this link and install them, see if that helps mate

Is It media center? if not XP drivers should be included with XP Home or Pro. above are for media center.

Was a sata drive installed when you bought the PC or an IDE drive if IDE also check your bios to see if onboard sata is enabled

also is the drive sata2 and does your motherboard support sata2 or just sata1 if it only supports sata1. take alook at the back of the wd drive and see if there is a jumper on it. if there is move it to the other position

    Hi,

Firstly thank you for the quick replies.

The computer is a "refurbished" one my father bought from ebay. It had a lots of problems so I suggested buying a copy of windows and reinstalling it. It did come with boot disks but they have been lost. The drive is definatly a sata 1 drive. I couldn't find an enable onboard sata option in the bios. Might it not have this option or have I just missed it? I have down loaded the drivers you suggested but am unsure what to do with them. Would I need to put them on a floppy disc and load them off that when installing windows?

When plug the hard drive into my computer running vista it recognises it an all is well.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the sata hard drive is the one that came with the computer.

    Hello Mate.

As far as I can see this PC came with windows media centre installed. The Drivers I posted are for that. There are no Sata drivers for XP home or Professional. The drive should automatically be picked up via both of these. Thats why I wondered if there was an option to enable the Onboard sata in the Bios. If the is it will be under advanced settings or something similar.

Can you see the drive recognised in the bios?

Have you installed xp on the original HDD that was in the comp when you bought it? if you have, have you installed all the software drivers for the E500 PC? or are you now trying to install XP on the WD Sata drive and during install/setup it doesn't recognise the sata drive

Just seen your other post so you are trying to install XP on the original WD sata drive that came with the PC?

during install hit the F6 key when it asks to install other drivers. XP disk should detect your drive and install

aspire e500 come with ULI sata. with sata hdd it cannot install xp automatically, you have to download driver ULI sata and put it into flopydisk or usb flashdisk. during instal you have to hit F6. that is the way to install but not easy.

the easiest way, you better buy an IDE harddisk so you can install xp automatically.
    IDE hdd use as system
    Sata hdd use as data

or, you try to find xp black edition that support to ULI sata.
