Default BMW analog signal to CAN BUS

    Hi everyone!

    I bought a BMW E46 M3 Engine,and i want to build it to a BMW E30.
The problem is,the CAN BUS system.
This M3 engine needs a speed signal, and a few more signals from CAN BUS line.
And the engine ECU is send CAN BUS signals too,to the instrument cluster,to show the oil temp.,coolant temp.,etc.

I read a few topics on the net, about a CAN BUS signal generator/emulator interface, but i don't know wich is the best for this, and how can i understand or learn, wich singal is what in the BMW CAN BUS system.

    And another:
    I read about another solution.
Wich is:It is possible to program out the SMG gearbox, lambda, and more from the ECU's soft.
    But i don't know how?
    Any idea?

    Regards.

I think you would be a lot better off using a decent after market management system. That way you don't need a can-bus and you can configure the engine how you want it.

There are people who can remove can bus from your ecu, remove back lambda sensors, air flow meeter and run engine on alpha-n mode, but it is costly.

    You mean:
I need to buy a universal programmable ECU like:Megasquirt, etc.?
I need the 343hp and dont want to program day after day if the weather is changed.
I had a programmable ECU and it was a crap. If the engine is original (no turbo/comressor installed)the original ecu is the best,i think.
But no problem,i wait more time, because i know, someone know the solution for this in this forum!
    Regards

    Hi!
I don't want to program out the lambda sensors.(sorry i had a mistake)
Only i need a CAN BUS emulator or something,to send a speed signal,SMG gearbox signal(or program out SMG) to the ecu,and receve the oil temp.,and coolant temp. signal from ecu.
All other sensors, like air mass,EGT,etc is need.

So i want to convert the analog signals to CAN and CAN to analog.
I know it is possible, but no "HOW" information on the net.

I think the keyword in my post was "decent". Something a bit more professional than Megasquirt.

The ori ECU can run standalone, you don't have to connect the canbus then.

Indeed decent aftermarket ecu, Motec, Bosch, Pectel etc...

The CAN BUS circuit,is like a telefon line,to connect when necessary to all others control units, like dash,airbag,abs,...
The sensors(temp.,rpm,...) are connected directly to unit.
This information to dash by Canbus, could be solved if you can install dash from car engine.

    Regards

For htis you could use this tool :
    UPA-USB CAN Bus Analyzer

    Hi!

Thank you for the best answer.
I want to keep the E30 original dashboard, and i want to use it with the E46 M3 ECU.
So i need to analyze the signals from ECU,and convert it to analog from Can Bus.
    And another thing:
The original E46 ECU search the SMG Transmission and a few things.
So i need to simulate,or program out from ecu.
I think I can program out with ECM Titanim,or another Chip Tuner program.
Just i need to learn, where can i find the right adresses in the maps...?

    Regards

Yes, E46 have can bus communication between the modules.
In OBD diagnostic it uses K-line.
After 2007 03 month, E90 uses Can Bus in OBD diagnostic line too.

    Hi!
    Its a BMW E46 M3 ECU MSS54 manual transmission.
It shows few errorslike:SMG transmission communication, steereing angle sensor,ABS/DSC can message timeout,etc..
If needed i dowload the sofware from ecu.
    Thank you!
    Here is the ecu label:
