There must be a black rectangle box in the front of the car. It's the fan control module.
New module solve the problem. Looks LIKE this.

Obviously it could be different: different number, connectors, etc...

But first check the fuses on the battery compartment. If the 10A fuse is blown the fan will run until the battery is drained.
    Sort of protection like Peugeot.
I meant the fuse, not the fact the battery is going to 0.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have checked all fuses, all wiring to and from fan motor. I don't see the module in the picture. Some info I picked up was, the newer rad fan has the module built into the motor. Can anyone confirm this? The info I get for this vehicle is a bit sketchy and vague. For the fan to start on its own in the middle of the night is strange. I have cleaned all connections and built it back up, and its now behaving itself " for now "

Change the fans, As you said the module is inside. I always seem to get these to do when the weather warms up.

I did have this problem before on a VW caddy 1.9 tdi 2008 model. I may not be the same, but it should be pretty similar. It was water in the main fuse box. New fuse box solved the problem. Hope that's a little help.

Ah sorry autoden, didn't know they put the module inside. My advise was for '00 model.
To save space and money the module is inside, but I bet fan+module is really expensive. Small things don't last very long.
