    Hi Dell_XPS

I done as you suggested and I now have 1 extra icon in my Menu - ULoader. I assume I can now make a copy of my backed ISO on to a USB key, insert into the Wii and use ULoader to boot that ISO? I assume I have to have ULoader format my USB key first - but if I do that, how will my PC see it for the copy of the ISO from my PC to USB key?

    ANSWER:
Ok, I downloaded and installed WBFS Manager 3.0
I then formatted my 16GB USB key using WBFS (which I hope at a later date I can get back to NTFS and use a 300GB external drive instead!)
    I then added an ISO
Finally, I took the USB key plugged into the Wii, switched on, used ULoader and choose Load - and it just froze. Left it like that for over 1 minute and had to hard reboot.
    Any ideas?????

Also, when I exit out of ULoader, I get Exception (DSI), Stack Dump and Code Dump messages.

    Hello,

Signed up to send my thanks to dell_xps (haha, using an XPS m1530 atm too) for this immensely easy to follow guide. Took me about 15 minutes to get everything sorted, now just need to purchase a few DVD-Rs tomorrow and I should hopefully be set.

However, just wondering what the situation is concerning Wii System Updates? Assumedly the advice is not to update; is there an auto-update mechanism in the Wii, given I sometimes play online and the Wii is connected to the Wifi.

Finally, what about games which are pre-packaged with updates?

Thanks for your help, and apologies if these questions have been asked/covered already.

4.2E is the latest, so nothing to update to as yet, it usually pops up on the screen if there is an update when you connect to the internet via the wifi, just say no.
As for games, if it ever asks you to update to play a game, look for another version that has the update taken out, never update your PAL Wii with an NTSC/JAP title or you will brick it.

PS You can play backup games on line by the way.

    Hi Dell_XPS

I took the USB key and formatted again with WBFS Manager (which strangely for a 16GB stick only takes about 2 seconds! - so must only be formatting the boot sector).

I added an ISO back onto the stick and plugged into my Wii. This time the ISO does load with uLoader!

Now this is the funny part (literally hillerious for anyone reading!). The ISO is of my wifes My Body Coach! We also have the original game, but I got the ISO from a friend so I can test the softmod. Can I use imgBurn to make an ISO of my own games and put them on the USB stick so I never have to use the CD's? I ask because I'm not sure if my PC can read a Wii game and then what the process is to get it onto a USB....

Also, when I launhc the game the options are to launch it with different IOS versions. Mines is set to IOS222. I'm gussing IOS is simular to O/S and there is an operating system. So if a backup fails to load with IOS222 can I change it to IOSxxx??

    Thanks.

Whoever thought of this forum and this topic is either an insider at Nintendo or a brain box! Whichever the case, I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say THANK YOU very much! You went through the trouble of testing this, documenting it and helping others.... Much apprecited.

I'm sure you will be able to use IMG burn to create your ISO files then drag them across m8.

Use IOS 249 to load games like new super mario game m8, everything that has been released in the past wee while while need IOS 249 m8.

    Hi

I have now donw the following:

    1. Softmod with 4.2e and Homebrew channel
    2. Backed up my game to USB
    3. Run the game on my Wii
    4. Backed up from my USB key to my PC and vice versa

    Works great so far!

I have a few more questions (Dell XPS, sorry to be a pain!)

    1. How can I add icons to my backed up games which reside on the USB stick? At the moment uLoader (which looks pants!) only has grey icons with the names of my backups and this dodgy captain hook for a cursor!

    2. How can I add icons for these games directly to the Wii menu so I do not have to go via uLoader?

    3. Running games from my USB key, where will the game data be saved?

    4. Homebrew apps work from the SD card. Is it possible to run apps such as USB Loader 1.1 directly form the Wii or from the USB key?

    5. What is the latest version of uLoader? I have seen 1.x and 2.x and 3.x around but will not use until I know the official lastest version

Thanks! Another day accomplished and another day awaits!

Hi, i'm new here. I just got my Wii yesterday and interested to soft-mod my Wii for the first time ever. So i'd like to ask you guys, the expert, and anyone who success in soft modding Wii by following the tutorial that Dell XPS provided.

After a read through the whole tutorial I have some question to be clarified if possible..

    1. Can this tut be used with other 4.2x ?
    2. If my Wii use D3-2 drive, the only option for me to play backup games(ISO) is via USB loader, am i correct?
    3. When you say, play backup games from USB, is that mean any USB thumb drive will do?
    4. If at any given time, while soft modding, my Wii appears to to be frozen, hangs, crashes or any kind of error, what is the correct procedure should i take? Hitting a reset button will do?
    5. If at any given time, while soft modding, i realize i messed up some thing or skip through a process, will i be able to start all over again(put Wii back into Virgin state)? How?
    6. I heard that Wii can be bricked easily, how to avoid that? If it happen, what should i do? Is there any fix for bricked Wii?
    7. After complete soft modding, will i be able to update(via internet) the new official firmware version in the future? Will the update mess up the mod?

That's all i can think of right now. Thank you in advance.

EDIT: OK, dont worry about all those questions. I've soft modding my Wii and success without any problem. But when I want to load an ISO game from USB stick(via uLoader), most of the time the game crashes right after safety precaution intro(but Wii still working fine) i have to press home to get out to the main menu.
I already set to IOS249 but still not working.
EDIT2: I tested with 2 games, Cooking Mama 2: World Kitchen and Metal Slug Anthology. Both crashes after safety precaution intro.
